NEW YORK (AP) ? Apple is expected to unveil a new version of the iPad at an event in San Francisco next week.
Apple sent out invitations to news media on Tuesday with an image showing part of an iPad screen. The company had been widely expected to reveal the third version of its popular tablet computer soon, close to the anniversary of the launch of the iPad 2.
The event will take place next Wednesday at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater, where Apple holds larger launch events.
Since the first iPad came out in 2010, sales of traditional computers have slowed in the U.S. and other wealthy countries. Rival PC and phone makers have been unable to mirror Apple's success with their own tablet computers. Apple has sold 55 million iPads so far, about the same as the estimated number of Mac computers in use.
Apple Inc. didn't provide any details on the new device. Various unconfirmed reports speak of a sharper screen and faster cellular broadband options.
It's not known when such a new device would be available for sale. Last year, sales of the iPad 2 began in the U.S. nine days after the announcement.

On Oscar weekend, 'Act of Valor' storms box office
NEW YORK (AP) ? On Oscar weekend, the real-life action stars of "Act of Valor" bested Hollywood's pretend heroes.
The Relativity Media action flick, starring real, active-duty U.S. Navy SEALs, topped the weekend box office, earning $24.7 million according to studio estimates Sunday. That was a strong opening for a unique film made in collaboration with the Navy, which sought to demonstrate the skill and bravery of the SEALs without Hollywood imitation.
"How often can you repeat the same heroes that are big stars pretending to be heroes?" said Kyle Davies, president of worldwide distribution for Relativity. "I think moviegoers are ready for a new, fresh experience."
"Act of Valor" led another strong weekend at the box office, as it was up 24.4 percent over the corresponding weekend last year. Attendance this year is up 20.4 percent, a surge that hasn't been driven by Academy Awards contenders but by new films in a traditionally tepid movie-going season.
"The newcomers this year have just been igniting the box office," said Paul Dergarabedian, box office analyst for Hollywood.com. "It's a very competitive marketplace for both the Oscar contenders and the newcomers."
Lionsgate's "Tyler Perry's Good Deeds," a more dramatic offering for the consistently popular Perry, opened with a healthy $16 million. Its audience was resoundingly female (76 percent) and may have been slightly diminished by the appeal of Denzel Washington in the thriller "Safe House." That earned $11.4 million, bringing its cumulative total to $98.1 million.
The weekend's other new releases ? the thriller "Gone" and the comedy "Wanderlust" ? had weaker debuts. The latter, a comedy with Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston, earned $6.6 million. "Gone," starring Amanda Seyfried, took in $5 million.
In their third week of release, Sony's romantic drama "The Vow" and Warner Bros.' family film "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" padded their totals. "Journey" added $13.5 million for a total of $76.7 million, while" The Vow" added $10 million more for a cumulative $103 million.
The success of "Act of Valor" validated an unusual strategy for Relativity, a production company that began distributing movies in 2010.
Relativity purchased the film, independently produced by the Bandito Brothers, for $13 million. It stoked interest through more than 400 advance screenings and a robust TV ad campaign that included Super Bowl commercials. Its marketing budget was reportedly approximately $30 million.
Though the film garnered poor reviews, audiences gave it an "A," according to CinemaScore. It has resonated with males, who made up 71 percent of the audience.
Internationally, the film, which plays much as patriotic propaganda, may face a stiffer challenge. It will open in foreign markets in future weeks, distributed by Film Nation.
Davies said the film was a "question mark" going into the weekend because of a lack of comparative films, but added that he's "optimistic" about its global prospects.
"In the same way we just didn't know what was going to happen domestically, it's still a bit of a mystery," said Davies. "You would think because it's very much an American story, there won't be the same level of interest. But I think at the end of the day, if a movie delivers on an entertainment quotient, then that's the most important factor."
Ahead of Sunday night's Academy Awards, no Oscar-contender finished in the top 10. Most of the favorites have been playing for weeks, if not months.
The Weinstein Co.'s "The Artist," the silent film ode and best picture favorite, is the only top award nominee still expanding its market. The film, which had a very slow rollout, added 158 theaters this weekend.
In its 14th week, it earned $3 million to bring its total to $31.9 million.
"Not a lot of people have seen it, so there's a lot of room left for 'The Artist' to add box office," said Dergarabedian. "'The Artist' has a lot to gain from (Sunday's) telecast."
Fox Searchlight's Oscar-nominated "The Descendants," in its 15th week, took in $2.2 million, raising its total to $78.5 million. Paramount's "Hugo" added $1.6 million to bring its haul to $69.4 million.
Disney's "The Help" remained, by far, the most popular best picture nominee at the box office, with a total of $169.7 million.
But on its biggest night, Hollywood can celebrate its strong theatrical business after a sluggish end to 2011 spurred much hand-wringing about the future of movie-going.
"It's fantastic," said David Spitz, head of worldwide distribution of Lionsgate. "It seems like it's cyclical, where everyone starts saying, 'Well, admissions are down.' Then all of sudden, (they're up). ... It certainly bodes well for this year."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? With the month of March looming, tornado chasers are already watching the Southeast as a nasty storm brews with the potential to spin off a batch of tornadoes.
But if funnel clouds develop Thursday or Friday as some forecasters believe, they won't be the first. This tornado season got an early and deadly start in late January when two people were killed by separate twisters in Alabama. Preliminary reports showed 95 tornadoes struck last month, compared with 16 in January during a particularly stormy 2011.
The season usually starts in March and then ramps up for the next couple of months, but forecasting these storm seasons is even more imprecise than predicting hurricane seasons. Tornadoes are too small and too short-lived for scientists to make seasonal predictions. They don't develop like blizzards and hurricanes, which are easier to project.
They pop in and pop out. The storms that give them birth may last only a few hours. Hurricanes and blizzards are lumbering beasts that spend days moving across the satellite maps. When a hurricane approaches, coastlines get days warning to evacuate. With a tornado, if the weather service can let people know 20 minutes in advance, it's considered a victory.
"The Joplin (Mo.) tornado (that killed 158 people last May) wasn't violent until just about the time it got to the hospital," said Harold Brooks, a research scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Severe Storms Laboratory, in Norman, Okla. "Even when you're in the field, there are still times when you're surprised by the intensity of the event and how quickly it started."
If a forecast for a hurricane or blizzard is off by a mile, it's still bad weather. But a mile difference means no damage in a tornado, Brooks said: "It's so much finer in time and space on the tornado, it does make it a harder problem."
It takes a piece of debris only a few seconds to fly around an entire tornado; it takes hours to circle a hurricane. But tornadoes, though smaller, can have stronger winds. Since 1950, there have been 58 tornadoes in the United States with winds exceeding 200 mph; six last year alone. Only three hurricanes have made U.S. landfall with winds more than 155 mph.
And forecasters are telling the Southeast and heartland to get ready again.
"It looks like this week we're moving into a slightly more active dynamic pattern," said warning meteorologist Greg Carbin at the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center, also in Norman, Okla.
The percolating Southeastern storm is proof of exactly how hard meteorologists have it. On Tuesday evening, Carbin said, "We're kind of expecting it to be a fairly significant event" and the storm center's website had a small red swath for potential severe storms with tornadoes.
By Wednesday morning, the storm center's forecast was much less clear. While the storm looks bad with potential for tornadoes, one of the key ingredients ? unstable upper level air ? is not quite behaving as predicted. So that means forecasters have less an idea of when and where the bad weather and potential twisters will hit, said Corey Mead, a meteorologist at the center.
By Wednesday afternoon, the storm prediction center massively expanded its Thursday watch area to include Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, West Virginia and parts of Virginia, the Carolinas and most of Florida.
"A lot of things have to come together at once to have a tornadic storm and the skill at forecasting all those things is near zero," said Howard Bluestein, a professor at the University of Oklahoma. "They are definitely more unpredictable."
All this comes on the heels of one of the worst tornado years in U.S. history. Tornadoes in 2011 started the earliest ever ? New Year's Day ? killing 550 people, injuring 5,400 and causing $10 billion in damage over the year, the most in U.S. history. The 2011 season had the most tornadoes in a single day and a single month on record.
But if you ask tornado experts what that means for this year, they'll answer that they just don't know. Later this summer, meteorologists will meet in a special conference to try to figure out how to do that type of longer-term tornado prediction. And the National Weather Service is installing new radar for live forecasting, tracking and distinguishing of tornadoes. Those together mean that maybe in 2020 or so, meteorologists will be able to say watch out this season or relax a bit ? but not just yet, Brooks said.
A new study by Columbia University professor Michael Tippett points out potential factors ? vertical wind shear, updraft and a type of rainfall ? that might help for long-range tornado forecasts.
Another factor is La Nina, the flip side of El Nino. It's a cooling of the central Pacific Ocean. TaxVox ? Blog Archive ? Perspectives on Tax Reform from Rudy ...
In the current issue of the journal The International Economy, ten?economic thinkers shared their views on how best to restructure the tax system. Their opinions crossed the political spectrum, ranging from House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI) to the Economic Policy Institute?s Andrew Fieldhouse. Two of my Tax Policy Center colleagues?TPC director Donald Marron and Urban Institute ?fellow Rudy Penner?wrote for the special section and TaxVox is?reposting their short essays here. Were it not for the growth in spending on Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, the United States wouldn?t have much of a budget problem. The two biggest programs?Social Security and Medicare?are retirement programs that are extremely popular politically. Both need to be reformed, but they cannot be cut abruptly and they cannot be cut drastically. Consequently, it?s hard to avoid concluding that some revenue increases will be needed to solve our fiscal problems.
Once that need is accepted, we have to ask, ?What kind of revenue increases?? The least desirable approach would raise income tax rates in the current system without fixing its complications, inefficiencies, and inequities. If raising rates is rejected, we must either create a new tax? such as a value-added tax or an energy tax?or design a significant, revenue-raising tax reform.
A VAT or an energy tax is probably a nonstarter politically. Republicans see a new tax as a money machine that would finance a much larger government. Democrats worry about the complexity of making such taxes sufficiently progressive
The Bowles-Simpson presidential fiscal commission showed that there are income tax reforms that can raise revenues progressively and efficiently. In one option, they got rid of a host of special tax provisions while limiting, but not eliminating, some of the most politically sensitive, such as the charitable and mortgage-interest deductions. That allowed them to lower the top rate for individuals to 28 percent while still raising $80 billion more in 2015. With three rates?12.7 percent, 21 percent, and 28 percent?the top 0.1 percent of the income distribution lost 11.8 percent of its after-tax income and the top 1 percent lost 7.8 percent. The middle three quintiles lost less than 2 percent.
Erskine Bowles and Alan Simpson achieved a high degree of progressivity by taxing capital gains and dividends at ordinary income tax rates. That imposes a very high double tax on corporate profits. A more radical option would limit the double tax by integrating the corporate and individual tax systems. An even more radical change would move toward a progressive consumption tax. Capital gains and dividends wouldn?t be taxed if reinvested, but would be hit if used to finance consumption.
None of this discussion implies that radical tax reform is easy. The revenue-neutral reforms of 1986 were anything but. A revenue-raising reform greatly increases the ratio of losers to winners. Accomplishing reform seems easy only when compared to persuading Americans to accept a VAT or new energy tax.

America?s tax system is a mess. It?s needlessly complicated, economically harmful, and often unfair. And it doesn?t raise enough money to pay our bills. That?s why almost everyone agrees that tax reform should be a top priority. Democrats, Republicans, and independents. Accountants, lawyers, and economists. Elected officials and ordinary citizens. All know our tax system is deeply flawed.
Unfortunately, they don?t agree on how to fix it. Some want revenue-neutral tax reform, while others want higher revenues to cut deficits and pay for rising entitlement spending. Some want to fix the income tax, while others want to tax consumption. Some want to cut tax rates across the board, while others would lift rates for high earners.
Public discourse, meanwhile, is hung up on the idea of attacking ?loopholes? when the real action is in tax breaks that benefit millions of taxpayers. Tax reform isn?t just about corporate jets or carried interest. It?s about the mortgage interest deduction, the tax exemption for employer provided health insurance, and generous tax incentives for debt-financed corporate investment. Those policies have major flaws, but they are not loopholes. They reflect fundamental economic and social choices, and they benefit well-defined constituencies.
Tax reform will thus involve a prolonged political struggle, as reformers seek some compromise that can attract enough support to overcome the inevitable inertia against change. That won?t be easy, but given our sky-rocketing debt, weak recovery, and flawed tax system, it?s clearly worth the effort.
Even as they seek a reasonable compromise, reformers should continue to articulate their visions of an ideal tax system. Mine would reflect five principles. First, the government should raise enough money to pay its bills. That likely means higher revenues, relative to GDP, than we?ve had historically. Second, it?s better to tax bads rather than goods. That means greater reliance on energy and environmental taxes. Third, it?s better to tax consumption than income; policymakers should thus limit how much they tax saving and investment. Fourth, the tax burden should be shared equitably both across income levels and among people of similar means who make different choices (for example, renting versus owning a home).
Finally, the best tax systems have a broad base and low rates. Policymakers should thus emphasize cutting tax breaks rather than raising tax rates. Indeed, some rates, like the 35 percent rate on corporate profits, should come down.
To afford such cuts, policymakers should go after the dozens of deductions, credits, exclusions, and exemptions that complicate the code and narrow the tax base, often with little economic or social gain. Many of these provisions have been sold as tax cuts, but are really spending in disguise. They should get the same scrutiny that policymakers devote to traditional spending programs.

Indian tour operators to increase engagement with Abu Dhabi DMCs ...
Over 60 enquiries were received by Abu Dhabi tourism representatives and industry stakeholders who took part this week in New Delhi's SATTE tourism exhibition where Abu Dhabi had its biggest Indian pavilion to date.
"We are increasingly receiving enquiries for holidays and honeymoons in Abu Dhabi and we are looking to meet with more Abu Dhabi-based DMCs to help us promote and package the destination. We have previously dealt with Dubai-based agencies but now that the demand for longer stays in Abu Dhabi is getting higher, we would like to explore more package options," said Parvesh Chugh, Managing Partner, We Make Holidays.
DBA&Sons and Al Masaood Holidays, two of Abu Dhabi's leading inbound tour operators, were busy answering enquiries from Indian outbound tour operators looking for guidance to help package the destination and from agencies looking for representation in the emirate.
"We have met many companies looking for representation in Abu Dhabi during SATTE, we will carefully study them and hopefully sign a few contracts in the near future," said DBA & Sons' Lubna Ali.
Al Masaood Holidays' Ramesh Brahmanandan described the exhibition as a good sales lead generator, "We had productive meetings and have gathered pretty good leads which we will follow-up on upon our return to Abu Dhabi."
Abu Dhabi's proximity to India, its diverse product offering along with the increased connectivity with Indian cities through Etihad Airways, which currently operates 52 weekly flights to Abu Dhabi from eight Indian cities, attracted interest for repeat visits from Indian tourists.
"There is a lot of excitement surrounding Abu Dhabi, many Indians have already visited the UAE and would like to go again and again and discover a new aspect of the country and we believe Abu Dhabi can offer that," said Jatin Chandok, Assistant Manager Operations, TSI Travel Services.
Golf tourism is also major area of growth for Abu Dhabi's inbound tourism from India The emirate, which boasts three championship-ready courses within a 25 kilometre radius, was recently named 'Golf Destination Of The Year Africa & Gulf States 2012' at the prestigious International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) awards.
"Indian golfers are always looking for new courses to play, and Abu Dhabi has one of world's best and most diverse golf offerings," said Gaurav Dogra, Chairman, Plan Your Holiday.

One in four are not hiring because they worry they may not be in business in 12 months.
