JERUSALEM (AP) - Mitt Romney is calling Jerusalem "the capital of Israel" and is pledging to stand with the U.S. ally.

The U.S. presidential candidate says in a speech in Jerusalem that America must stand with Israel. The Republican says both countries believe in democracy, the rule of law and opposition to Iran becoming a nuclear power.

Romney also is calling Israel "the startup nation."

Jerusalem is a flashpoint in the region. Both Israelis and Palestinians have claimed rights to the city.

Romney says the United States must be "unapologetic ambassadors" to push to advance the values that the United States and Israel share. Romney says the United States will always stand with Israel, including its insistence that Jerusalem be the cornerstone of Israel.

Wisconsin's Sand Boom Brings Jobs, Prosperity

Leader-Telegram -- "A new industry continues to rise ? quite literally ? from the ground in west-central Wisconsin.

Officials from 12 regional counties reported the area now has a total of 52 silica sand mines that are either operating or approved (see map above).

That's up 136 percent from 22 just a year ago and shows just how fast the sand storm is sweeping across west-central Wisconsin, which is home to plentiful deposits of a variety of sand prized in the rapidly growing energy extraction practice known as hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking." While some experts have been predicting a slowdown in the industry's dramatic rise from virtually nonexistent four years ago, county planners who deal with permits for the mines haven't noticed such a change.

"It's still a boom," said Kevin Lien, director of the Land Management Department in Trempealeau County, which leads the region with six operating mines, 10 more on the way and another five applications being considered next month.? Right behind are Barron and Chippewa counties, which both have eight operating or approved mines and two more that have been proposed.

"I don't know if it's peaking yet. We just received two more applications," said David Gifford, zoning administrator in Barron County, which had only one approved silica, or "frac," sand mine a year ago."

Three sciencey, summery activities for kids and families | ChicagoNow

July is coming to a close. ?The weather is hotter than ever, driving some people to the beach and others to the air-conditioned indoors for computers and video games. ?There's still another month before kids go back to school. ?Sunburn is one thing- don't let their brains fry, too!

Here are 3 ways to keep little minds engaged in science through the dog days of summer:

?

1. FOR KIDS: Summer Camp at Kids Science Labs - No, it's not too late to sign up for summer camp! ?Kids Science Labs offers their hands-on, science adventure camps in week-long chunks. ? The goals of KSL's camps are "to enhance your child's critical thinking skills, academic confidence, and cognitive ability." ?The student-teacher ratio is great- 8:1- and a new subject is introduced each week. ?Kids 4-12 can sign up for just the parts that interest them, or attend for weeks at a time.? This upcoming week (starting July 30th) features Weather, Oceans, and Water. ?After that, it's How Stuff Works. ?See the full list here. ?(1500 N. Kingsbury St. ?$350/wk+. ?Camps run 9AM-noon OR 9AM-3PM.)

2 . FOR TEENS: ?Maker Camp - Got a Google+ account? ?Me neither. ?It might be time to get one, because MAKE Magazine is running one awesome online summer camp. ?Maker Camp is "a virtual DIY camp for teens" running through August 24th. ?Each day, a new project is introduced at 8AM- a fine motivation to get your teen out of bed! ?Last week's projects included pirate rigging, kryptonite candy, electric origami, and a "virtual field trip" to see octocopters in action. ?Building goes until noon. ?At that time, a Google+ hangout occurs, where campers and counselors discuss their experiences. ?Photos and videos are shared and celebrated. ?By 2PM, camp is over. ?Your teen can spend the rest of their summer day doing... whatever it is teens do.

Maker Camp... with an adorable robot!

?
3. FOR FAMILIES: ?MSI's Summer Brain Games - The folks at the Museum of Science and Industry are looking to prevent the scary-sounding phenomenon, "brain drain." ?Summer Brain Games is an 8-week, online program that introduces a DIY science project for families every 7 days. ?Previous activities have included terrariums, catapults, and soda bottle rockets. ?They're currently in Week 6, but you can catch up any time. ?Registering also qualifies families to win free MSI memberships, or even a sweet tech package.

Summer Brain Games Logo

?

I must need to engage my brain a bit more, myself. ?Just last night, I had a dream that I wasn't going to graduate college because I kept skipping classes and missing assignments.

...You don't want to know how long ago college actually was for me. ?That anxiety lasts a lifetime.

Enjoy the summer science!

Home Improvement Loans - Remodelers, Columbus

Last updated 1 day 10 hours ago

Now that you?ve decided to update your home, the next step is deciding how to finance the work. Did you know that you can secure a home improvement loan from your bank specifically for your remodeling project? To find out more about how to take advantage of this great resource, keep reading.

What Is a Home Improvement Loan?

A home improvement loan is a loan from your bank extended specifically for the task of home remodeling or repair, allowing you to renovate without tapping into your savings. It can be used for small or large projects, from minor repairs to entire home renovations and everything in between. If your remodeling project is specifically going to target defects, such as a cracked or crumbling foundation or outdated plumbing, consider taking out a home improvement loan to ensure that the job is done correctly.

How Do I Get a Home Improvement Loan?

A home improvement loan borrows against the equity, or amount of ownership, that you have established on your home. Your equity is calculated from the difference between the remaining value of your mortgage and the current market value of your home. Your equity is then used as collateral by the bank when you secure your loan.

What Are the Terms of a Home Improvement Loan?

Oftentimes, the interest rate on a home improvement loan is fixed, so even if interest rates rise while you are still paying back your loan, your rate will remain the same. Additionally, the interest you pay is tax deductible up to an amount of one million dollars. Your bank may require periodic inspections of the contractor?s work to ensure that you are following the plan you laid out when you acquired your loan.

FILE - In this Thursday, April 26, 2012 file photo, a sign advertises a pending residential real estate sale in Framingham, Mass. Americans signed fewer contracts to buy previously occupied homes in June 2012, the latest sign the housing market recovery is uneven. The National Association of Realtors said Thursday, July 26, 2012 that its index of sales agreements fell 1.4 percent last month to 99.3. May's reading was revised down to 100.7. A reading of 100 is considered healthy. The index is 9.5 percent higher than it was a year ago. The index bottomed at 75.88 in June 2010 after a homebuyers' tax credit expired. (AP Photo/Bill Sikes, File)

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Businesses placed fewer orders for most long-lasting manufactured goods in June, suggesting many are losing confidence in the slumping U.S. economy.

The housing recovery also lost some momentum last month as fewer Americans signed contracts to buy homes. A third report Thursday showed applications for unemployment benefits plunged last week ? normally a good sign. But economists quickly dismissed the decline, saying fewer temporary auto layoffs distorted the figure.

The latest data added to worries that growth in the April-June quarter could be sharply lower than the start of the year. The government will issue its first of three estimates for second-quarter growth on Friday.

"It looks like the corporate sector is starting to lose confidence in the economy," said Ethan Harris, co-director of global economics at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, said.

The most alarming sign Thursday was a report from the Commerce Department on business orders for durable goods, items expected to last at least three years.

While overall orders rose 1.6 percent in June from May, the increase was driven mostly by a surge in volatile aircraft orders.

When excluding aircraft and other transportation equipment, orders fell 1.1 percent ? the third decline in four months. And orders for so-called core capital goods, which indicate business investment plans, dropped 1.4 percent, also the third decline in four months.

Businesses placed fewer orders for industrial machinery, computers, and autos in June.

Manufacturing has helped drive growth since the recession ended three years ago. But it has slowed in recent months, along with the broader economy.

The report on durable goods "is just another number confirming how weak the second quarter was," Harris said.

Economists expect growth slowed in the April-June quarter to an annual rate of only 1.5 percent, according to a survey by FactSet. That's down from 1.9 percent in the first three months of the year.

But Harris says that may be too optimistic. He expects growth of only 1.1 percent. And he believes the economy will remain sluggish for the rest of the year.

Europe's financial crisis has lowered demand for U.S. exports. And the pending expiration of several U.S. tax cuts at the start of next year, along with scheduled spending cuts, may be weighing on growth.

Many U.S. companies may postpone large investment plans until the outlook for those two issues improves, he said.

"Why am I going to make a big capital spending decision, when I know that in a few months the economy could take a big hit?" Harris asked. Some economists forecast that the looming U.S. budget crisis could shave several points from next year's growth.

Overall durable goods orders rose to $221.6 billion in June. That's 57 percent higher than the recession low hit in the spring of 2009. But orders are still 9.1 percent below their peak in December 2007, when the recession began.

Europe did receive a dose of good news Thursday when Mario Draghi, president of the European Central Bank, said he would "do whatever it takes" to preserve the euro currency.

Stocks surged on his comments. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 170 points in midday trading. Broader indexes also rose.

The housing market has been a bright spot this year. But a report Thursday showed the recovery will be bumpy.

The National Association of Realtors said its index of sales agreements fell 1.4 percent in June to 99.3, down from 100.7 in May. A reading above 100 is considered healthy.

Contract signings typically indicate where the housing market is headed. There's generally a one- to two-month lag between a signed contract and a completed deal.

The index is 9.5 percent higher than it was a year ago. And Joshua Shapiro, chief U.S. economist at MFR Inc., noted that despite June's drop, the index is higher than it was in April. That could translate into higher sales of previously occupied homes in July.

Separately, the Labor Department said the number of people seeking unemployment benefits fell by 35,000 to a seasonally adjusted 353,000. But economists view the report with skepticism because the government's seasonal adjustments didn't anticipate fewer summer shutdowns by automakers, which have resulted in fewer temporary layoffs.

Phil Stutz, M.D.: Design for Loving: A Killer in Business, a Disaster in Love

Amanda was a fashionista, struggling to launch her own clothing line. In her early 20s, razor-thin, and strikingly dressed, she certainly looked the part.

In business Amanda was, in her own words, "a killer," with a strong sense of entitlement, the sort of patient who is surprised when I ask her not to take calls on her cellphone during a session. Unfortunately, Amanda behaved with the same demanding selfishness in her romantic life.

On the face of it, Amanda's boyfriend Blake was the perfect partner for Amanda and her volatile moods. Blake was handsome, refined, easygoing and had his own strong sense of self (he was a successful medical researcher). They'd been together four months -- a long-term commitment by Amanda's standards -- but they were in the middle of a make-or-break fight when she came to see me.

The quarrel began at a party where Blake ignored Amanda and spent the evening talking to another woman. Enraged, Amanda took him to task on the ride home -- but Blake defended himself. He hated these parties she dragged him to where she trawled for backers for her new company. So what if he'd found someone he enjoyed talking with and had a good time for once?

By the time they reached home they were no longer speaking. But Amanda was still thinking -- and all her thoughts were about the injustice she'd just gone through. Like a broken record, her mind repeated justifications for her rage and hatched plans for revenge -- like sleeping with a GQ model she knew. She stayed awake all night compiling a litany of everything about Blake she couldn't stand, from his favorite sweater to the way he cleared his throat.

"Have you had this kind of reaction with previous boyfriends?" I asked her.

"Only when they deserved it," Amanda shot back, and burst into tears.

It turned out every one of her relationships had ended the same way. After a couple of months (or even weeks) the guy would do something to offend Amanda that she'd escalate in her head. "I can't love the person any more. I can't even stand to be in the same room with them. My friends call it my 'point of no return.'"

Amanda's rages affected her business ambitions too. She'd already screamed at a buyer for a major department store over a series of perceived slights, lost the order and spent months trying to woo him back.

In each situation, it didn't matter if Amanda was right or wrong. Her problem was that she'd reach a state of obsession with the person who'd "mistreated" her. It was as if the person had moved into her head and pitched a tent. While she fixated on how badly they'd acted, and how she'd even the score, life was passing her by.

We call this state the "maze" because once you're in it, it's almost impossible to free yourself. Amanda was an extreme case, but everyone, even the calmest and most rational among us, gets trapped in the maze. We're led there by a universal human expectation that the world will treat us fairly. This is the fantasy of a child. When the scales of justice don't get balanced on the spot, it leaves us in a private hell of rage and retribution.

There's only one way out of this trap; we need to live by a principle more powerful than fairness. We need to accept other human beings in the condition they're actually in -- especially when their behavior offends us. The force that creates this acceptance is love. But it's not easy to love someone when your natural inclination is to hate and hurt them.

This kind of love isn't the result of changing your opinion about them; it's love you generate despite your opinion. That requires a tool. We call it "active love" because it takes effort, but the beneficiary of this effort is you. When you fully accept someone as they are, you have no further expectations of them -- only then are you freed from the maze. You can begin to live again.

Potential arthritis drug might also aid bone growth

Patients with rheumatoid arthritis have taken for decades a drug that also resulted in unwanted bone loss. But a researcher at Georgia Health Sciences University is studying a protein that could not only treat the disease but aid in bone growth.

Dr. Nianlan Yang, a post-doctoral fellow at GHSU, was recently awarded a two-year, $100,000 fellowship grant by the Arthritis Foundation. She is studying a component from a class of drugs called glucocorticoids, which includes the steroid prednisone.

The drugs have been used for many years to treat conditions like rheumatoid arthritis even though how exactly they work in the body is not well known, Yang said. The drugs have anti-inflammatory effects which are beneficial but can also have serious side effects, such as bone or muscle weakness or metabolic impacts that can bring on diabetes, according to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases.

The drug ?just works on too many things,? Yang said. ?It covers too much. So sometimes it will benefit you and sometimes it does some bad things to your body.?

The work began with just trying to understand the mechanisms of the drug.

?At first we?re just trying to figure out how glucocorticoid works,? Yang said. The research zeroed in on a protein called glucocorticoid-induced leucine zipper that appeared to be the way the drug was inhibiting inflammation. By that inhibition, it was also promoting stem cells to become bone-forming cells and promote bone growth.

?This is really interesting because most people believe glucocorticoids cause bone loss,? Yang said.

Some of her work will be in a mouse specially bred to overexpress the inflammatory agent to see if the protein can block its effects but she would also like to create her own mouse model that overexpresses the GILZ protein. The goal is to continue to study the protein to find out what is causing the good effects, Yang said.

?We still need to find out which part can be used for drug development,? she said. ?From (lab) bench to bed, that?s always a long way to go.?

The protein or small molecule could offer a way to have a double beneficial effect for rheumatoid arthritis patients.

?We have to look at how this inflammation triggered bone loss,? Yang said. ?That?s why we?re interested in this small molecule because this small molecule can target both sides of this disease, inflammation and bone loss.?

Price hike still haunts Netflix stock 1 year later - seattlepi.com

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Netflix is more popular among couch potatoes than investors a year after its polarizing decision to raise U.S. prices for video subscription services.

The unexpected twist that Netflix unveiled a year ago Thursday triggered mass customer cancellations and a sell-off in its stock, which has wiped out more than $11 billion in shareholder wealth.

Netflix Inc. has bounced back this year to revive its subscriber growth. But even after a recent rally, its stock remains more than 70 percent below its peak price of nearly $305 about a year ago, largely because of concerns about what Netflix has been spending to attract and retain subscribers. The stock gained $3.33, or 4 percent, to close Thursday at $84.97.

The company increased its prices by as much as 60 percent as part of an effort to phase out its DVD-by-mail rental service and raise more money to license TV shows and movies for its Internet video library.

Preparing for the day when DVDs become obsolete makes good business sense as the ubiquity of high-speed Internet connections makes it easier and more convenient to watch video online. Promoting Internet streaming over DVDs also helps Netflix save money on postage as it mails fewer discs.

But DVDs still appeal to subscribers who want to watch the latest movie releases. That's because studios generally have refused to license their more recent material for online viewing, leaving Netflix's Internet video library with a less comprehensive selection than what's available on DVD.

The shortcoming wasn't a problem until last year because Netflix had been bundling DVDs with unlimited video streaming in a package that cost as little as $10 per month. With the price change, Netflix split video streaming and DVD rentals into separate services that raised the monthly minimum cost for both to $16.

As if the higher prices weren't aggravating enough, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings infuriated subscribers even more a couple months later with a ham-handed apology that dropped another bombshell: The company intended to spin off the DVD service into a separate website called Qwikster. That switch would inconvenience subscribers who still wanted both DVDs and Internet streaming by requiring them to maintain two separate accounts on different websites.

The ensuring uproar caused Hastings to quickly scrap Qwikster, but by then the damage had been done.

Netflix lost 800,000 U.S. subscribers during the quarter spanning the price hike and the Qwikster announcement, but the company has since bounced back from that setback. As of March 31, Netflix had 26.1 million U.S. subscribers, more than the 24.6 million the company had just before the price hike was announced. The bulk of those subscribers now pay only for Internet streaming.

Just as Hastings envisioned, the streaming service is becoming increasingly addictive as Netflix adds more titles.

Netflix, which is based in Los Gatos, Calif., says its streaming subscribers worldwide watched more than 1 billion hours of Internet video in June. That translates to a monthly average of about 38 hours per subscriber, up from 28 hours late last year. Netflix's commercial-free Internet video library now gets watched more frequently than most TV networks, which depend on ads and cable fees.

Despite the popularity, Netflix hasn't proven that it will be able to make as much money streaming video over the Internet as it has delivering rented DVDs through the mail during the past decade.

Internet video hasn't been as profitable so far primarily because Netflix has had to spend heavily to secure the licensing rights to show movies and TV shows online whenever subscribers want to watch them. The popularity of streaming could prompt movie and TV studios to demand even higher fees.

As of March 31, Netflix had signed contracts that will require the company to pay $3.6 billion in licensing rights during the next five years, including $730 million by next April. Netflix ended March with about $800 million in cash.

The obligations have been piling up so quickly that Netflix expects to post an annual loss this year, the first time that has happened since 2002. Netflix will release its second-quarter results on July 24.

"Smart people question whether they will ever make money," Pachter said of the challenges facing Netflix in streaming. "Netflix is growing unprofitably, and content owners who see usage (of video streaming) go up by 50 percent are either going to charge more or offer lower quality content. Either is a drag on the stock."

Pachter said he is wondering if Netflix's stock might even fall below the $45 price target that he has set for the shares.

Citigroup analyst Mark Mahaney said the concerns about Netflix are overblown, although he doesn't expect the stock to return to its previous high any time soon. He believes Netflix shares could reach $130 within the next year.
