Kobe and LeBron's Olympic Squad Lose to 1992's Dream Team, Says NBA 2K13 [Video]

Kobe and LeBron's Olympic Squad Lose to 1992's Dream Team, Says NBA 2K13Kobe and LeBron's Olympic Squad Lose to 1992's Dream Team, Says NBA 2K13 If you got in on this summer's bar argument over which U.S. Olympic basketball team was better, and were convinced that the Dream Team could beat anything that walked the earth, including a team of Kobe Bryant and LeBron James, then NBA 2K13 has good news for you.

The United States' 1992 Olympic basketball team of Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley prevailed over their 2012 counterparts, 133-126, in a simulation run on NBA 2K13, which releases on Tuesday. It was not a runaway victory, but the Dream Team held a lead for all but one brief instance in the second quarter.

This game was set for two computer-controlled teams to play each other, in full 12-minute quarters, on Hall-of-Fame difficulty (which governs computer-controlled players' behavior.)

2K Sports, at the urging of executive producer Jay-Z, reunited the entire 1992 Olympic team in a video game for the first time in 20 years, mostly to settle the argument Bryant started when he ventured that the 2012 Olympians would win.

Matchups, of course, are at the heart of this argument, and a really bad one in favor of the Dream Team made a huge difference. Chris Paul, paired off against Magic Johnson, just had no answer for a guy eight inches taller and a lot heavier. That's probably a big reason why Magic ended up as the player of the game, leading all scorers with 34 points on 15-of-17 shooting, while adding five rebounds and six assists.

I had some difficulty with video capture in the first quarter, which explains the dearth of highlights from it. Team USA 2012 took a 37-36 lead at 10:45 of the second quarter on a jumper by Russell Westbrook, which you can see above. It was the only lead Team USA 2012 had all game. Twice they got it to within 1 point, the latest with about 9 minutes to go in the third quarter, but the Dream Team had very little trouble scoring and forced Team USA 2012 to methodically attack the basket. They only got 14 points on the fast break. A 17-6 run in the fourth quarter still got Team USA 2012 no closer than 5.

Paul still distributed eight assists. Kevin Durant led the 2012 Olympians with 31 points, while James and Bryant each added 22. Carmelo Anthony had a respectable 16 points, six rebounds and two assists in 17 minutes of work, hitting all eight of his shots.

Jordan had 26 points on 12-for-22 shooting, with four assists, a steal and a block. Clyde Drexler picked up 16 points, 14 in the first half, before sitting most of the second. Larry Bird played more than he did when he was on this team in real life, as he suffered from back trouble for most of 1992 and was selected mostly in honor of his overall career. He logged 23 minutes in the game and hit all four of his shots, scoring nine points.

Barkley's 34 minutes were the second most of anyone on the Dream Team, and he came away with just six points and four rebounds, matched up against James for most of the evening. David Robinson had probably the game's best dunk, slipping off a screen through a completely vacated lane to throw down a thundering, two-handed, let-me-clear-my throat jam.

Jordan was right that the Dream Team's defense and shot blocking would likely prove the difference, but it wasn't by a wide margin. The Dream Team picked up five steals and four blocks, but Team USA 2012 still shot 62 percent and did a little bit better in rebounding, although having more misses gooses that stat. The teams attempted only seven three point shots combined.

One note: Neither team's lone collegian?Anthony Davis for 2012, Christian Laettner for the Dream Team?got into the game.

NBA 2K13 arrives in stores on Tuesday.

(AP) ? The road to heaven is paved with more than good intentions for Germany's 24 million Catholics. If they don't pay their religious taxes, they will be denied sacraments, including weddings, baptisms and funerals.

A decree issued last week by the country's bishops cast a spotlight on the longstanding practice in Germany and a handful of other European countries in which governments tax registered believers and then hand over the money to the religious institutions.

In Germany, the surcharge for Catholics, Protestants and Jews is a surcharge of up to nine percent on their income tax bills ? or about ?56 ($72) a month for a single person earning a pre-tax monthly salary of about ?3,500 ($4,500).

For religious institutions, struggling to maintain their congregations in a secular society where the Protestant Reformation began 500 years ago, the tax revenues are vital.

The Catholic Church in Germany receives about ?5 billion ($6.5 billion) annually from the surcharge. For Protestants, the total is just above ?4 billion ($5.2 billion). Donations, in turn, represent a far smaller share of the churches' income than in the United States.

With rising prices and economic uncertainty, however, more and more Catholics and Protestants are opting to save their money and declare to tax authorities they are no longer church members, even if they still consider themselves believers.

"I quit the church already in 2007," Manfred Gonschor, a Munich-based IT-consultant, said. "It was when I got a bonus payment and realized that I could have paid myself a nice holiday alone on the amount of church tax that I was paying on it."

Gonschor added he was also "really fed up with the institution and its failures."

Such defections have hit the Catholic Church especially hard ? it has lost about 181,000 tax-paying members in 2010 and 126,000 a year later, according to official figures. Protestants, who number about 24 million nationwide, lost 145,000 registered members in Germany in 2010, the most recent year from which figures are available.

But the figures include some people who still want to baptize their children, take communion on major religious holidays, marry in a religious ceremony and receive Christian burials.

The group We are Church, which claims to represent tens of thousands of grassroots Catholics, said many Germans stop paying the tax because they disagree with the church's policies or simply want to save money ? not because they have lost their faith.

"I haven't quit because I still think that I might want to get married in a church one day, even though I know that's absurd," said Anna Ainsley, a 31-old-year banker and a Protestant from Frankfurt. "But when I see my tax declaration, then I think every year that I should finally quit."

Those are the people that Germany's Catholic bishops had in mind when they decreed on Sept. 20 that stopping the payment of religious taxes was "a serious lapse" and those who did so would then be excluded from a range of church activities.

"This decree makes clear that one cannot partly leave the Church," the bishops said in a statement. "It is not possible to separate the spiritual community of the Church from the institutional Church."

Wavering Catholics will now be sent letters reminding them of the consequences of avoiding the church tax, including losing access to all sacraments.

"Maybe you haven't considered the consequences of your decision and would like to reverse this step," a draft of the letter states.

Protestants have taken a less stern position, saying non-taxpayers are still welcome to attend services and take communion. But becoming a godparent, getting married in a church or taking a job in church-affiliated institutions such as hospitals or kindergartens are off-limits to those who stop paying their taxes.

Switzerland and Austria also tax Catholic and Protestant church members. In Denmark, the State Lutheran church collects a tax from its members. Members of Sweden's Lutheran Church pay around 1 percent of their income, collected by the national tax authorities, just as in Finland.

In Italy, tax-payers have the choice of diverting a small part of their income taxes to religious institutions, including the Catholic Church and the country's Jewish community, but the contribution is voluntary.

In none of those countries have the churches taken such a firm stand against dropouts.

So far German courts have stood by the bishops' decision. This week the country's top administrative court threw out a lawsuit against the archdiocese of Freiburg by retired theologian Hartmut Zapp, who has spent years fighting the Catholic Church over the tax.

Zapp argued that a Catholic should be free to stop paying but remain a member of the spiritual community and that his religious beliefs could not possibly be tied to a tax payment.

The archdiocese responded in a statement that "those who lack solidarity bid farewell to the community of believers."

The tax issue presents moral and ethical dilemmas to millions of German believers, even dividing couples.

Sonja Trott, a 34-year-old teacher from Munich, said she quit the Catholic Church 15 years ago because she no longer believed in its teachings.

"Now I'd like to convince my husband that he also should quit, that would save us a lot of money," she said.

But her husband, Christoph, a sales executive, says he cannot imagine refusing to pay on moral grounds because it would seem like a betrayal of his faith. "I don't like paying it, but I do because I fear the step of quitting the church."

He would prefer to donate part of the money to charities "but well, in Germany the payment determines whether I'm allowed to consider myself a Catholic or not."

For other Germans, it's unethical to stop paying the tax but continue to use the church when it suits them.

Christine Solf, a Munich-based consultant, says she doesn't attend services regularly but appreciates the church's charitable work. For her, church membership is also a family tradition.

"I know people who quit for financial reasons but then still want their children to be baptized. That's not OK in my opinion," she said.

Tesla Motors Stock Investing

Back in March, I was speaking at a conference about the future of personal transportation.

I discussed how a new generation called the Millennials or Generation Y would ultimately force change in the marketplace and present a real challenge to car makers.

You see, there have been a number of studies that have suggested this particular generation?? which represents the kinds of numbers that allowed the baby boomers to dictate a lot of our consumer decisions today ? is less interested in car ownership than previous generations...

They prefer public transportation, biking, walking, and car-sharing services like Zipcar (NASDAQ: ZIP).

And for those folks who now fall between the ages of 19-31 who are receptive to car ownership, they account for about 25% of the U.S. automobile market. In ten years that's expected to rise to 40%.

So, what will they drive?

According to a recent Deloitte study, these folks tend to mock gas guzzlers and embrace hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric vehicles (EVs).

If you're a regular reader of these pages, you know I've long been a supporter of electric vehicles. I firmly believe that by the end of this decade, EVs will capture between 1% and 1.5% of the total US vehicle market.

On the surface, this may not seem like much. But it's actually a pretty aggressive target?? and a pretty big deal.

As a result, we've profited from the early development of this market from every angle; most of this came from riding the early wave of lithium and high-performance battery plays a few years back. Today it's a bit more difficult. And while I remain a strong supporter of electric vehicle development, I'm extremely cautious as an investor.

In fact, the only EV-related stock I've played this year was Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA), and I jumped out back in March after the stock started looking a bit top-heavy after crossing the $36 mark.

Since then, I've watched the stock tumble and rise a few times. I've seen a number of trading opportunities (although I did not play the stock this way), and I've read some pretty long and detailed analyses of the company by both credible analysts and overly-optimistic bloggers posing as analysts, as well as by the typical anti-EV narcissists who get off at watching a game-changing industry struggle with the early bumps and bruises that come with any disruptive technology.

The latter, of course, typically provide little more than noise. But they came out in full force this week after Tesla's recent announcement that it was cutting its 2012 revenue forecast...?

Due to a slower-than-expected rollout of the Model S sedan, the company has adjusted its full-year revenue to come in at around $400 million to $440 million. This is down from Tesla's prior outlook of between $560 million and $600 million.

mertsla

Tesla Model S

This is a pretty big discrepancy. And on the day of that announcement, the stock fell in excess of 10%

Needless to say, the knuckle-dragging naysayers were busy little bees over the past few days, finding as many ways as they could to not only trash Tesla, but the EV market as a whole.

We heard the same broken record rhetoric about how no one wants these cars, how sales are disappointing, and how the technology ?isn't there yet?...

It's all nonsense.

Don't get me wrong; I'm not rushing out to buy shares of Tesla. And quite frankly, I think some analysts' price targets on this one are a bit off base. I was very suspicious last week after Morgan Stanley put a $50 price target on this thing.

Of course, I don't have access to the same intelligence and data as the suits at Morgan Stanley, so perhaps I'm missing something...

But I don't believe Tesla will even have the capacity to impress enough to push the stock to those levels until we get some better clarity on Q4.

It is only then when we will have a better read on Model S volumes. If volumes do in fact increase, then we should see the cost improvements necessary to improve gross margins.

I remain bullish on Tesla as a small but growing force in the auto industry. And I definitely wouldn't bet on Tesla to crash and burn, as some not-so-honorable analysts have suggested.

However, I'd be hesitant about believing overzealous price targets on this one. Because the truth is, until we see how Q4 shakes out, there's just not enough data to back a price target exceeding $35.

To a new way of life and a new generation of wealth...

How to See Uranus in Telescopes This Weekend

The planet Uranus reaches opposition on Saturday (Sept. 29). This means that Uranus is directly opposite the sun in the sky.

Uranus rises will rise as the sun sets, and set as the sun rises. It will be highest in the sky at local midnight, roughly 1 a.m. if you are on Daylight Saving Time.

Uranus was discovered accidentally by William Herschel on the night of March 13, 1781. All the other planets had been known since prehistoric times, so this was a major discovery in its time, and made Herschel famous.

The reason Uranus had remained undiscovered for so long is that, although it is quite large, the third largest planet after Jupiter and Saturn, it is very far away from the sun, so is very dimly lit. If you know exactly where to look, it is just possible to see Uranus with the naked eye, but most of us need binoculars and a good chart to spot it among the thousands of stars of similar brightness.

When Herschel first observed it, he was unsure what he had seen: a nebula, a comet, or a planet. After a night or two, he saw that it had moved, so it couldn?t be a nebula. It didn?t change size or shape, so he knew it wasn?t a comet.

Once the object's orbit was determined, Herschel knew he had found the sun?s seventh planet: 31,763 miles (51,118 km.) in diameter, four times larger than the Earth. It orbits at 19 times the distance from Earth to the sun, twice as far from the sun as Saturn. [Amazing Photos of Uranus]

How to see Uranus

In binoculars, Uranus is indistinguishable from a star. Look for it currently in the constellation Pisces. [Uranus: Inside and Out (Infographic)]

Opposition night is not the best night to look for it, because the full moon will be nearby flooding the sky with light. Look for it instead tonight, or in a week?s time when the moon has moved on.

Don?t try to use Pisces to find it, because this is a dim constellation. Instead, start with the Great Square of Pegasus, a conspicuous large square of stars. This will be in the southern sky (of the Northern Hemisphere) about two thirds of the way from the horizon to directly overhead at local midnight, or in the eastern sky earlier in the evening.

Use the two stars on the left side of the Great Square, Alpheratz and Algenib, and project a line joining them down towards the horizon. At almost exactly the same distance below the bottom star you will see (in binoculars) what looks like a double star. These will be the two brightest ?stars? in this part of the sky.

The star on the left (in the Northern Hemisphere) is 44 Piscium. The ?star? on the right is not a star at all, but the planet Uranus. Pay close attention to the distance between these two objects, and check it again in a night or two. Uranus will have moved away to the right, the distance between star and planet increasing.

In binoculars, Uranus will look just like a star. In a small telescope with about 200x magnification, you will see a tiny blue-green disk. Uranus has 27 known moons, but these are all too tiny to be seen in a small telescope.

Strange Uranus facts

One of the most interesting things about Uranus is the tilt of its axis of rotation. Most planets rotate around a pole which points roughly at right angles to the plane of their orbit.

Uranus? pole is tipped over so that its axis is almost in the same plane as its orbit. As a result, the sun shines almost continuously on the northern half the planet for part of its year, and continuously on the southern half for another part of its year. The result is the most extreme seasonal variation found on any planet in the solar system.

When Herschel discovered Uranus, he needed to find a name for it. This was as big a deal in the 18th century as naming a stadium is today. Knowing who his chief patron was, he decided to name it after his king, George III: Georgium Sidus (George?s Star). Now George III was not very popular outside England, so there was a lot of resistance to this name. Finally Johann Bode suggested that it be named Uranus after the Greek God of the sky, Ouranos, and this was agreed to by all astronomers.

Unfortunately, this name causes pronunciation difficulties for most speakers of the English language. If it?s pronounced "ew-RAY-nus" it provokes laughter from sixth-graders. The alternate pronunciation, "EWR-a-nus" is not much better. Perhaps we should go back to the original Greek pronunciation, "OOR-a-nus."

Editor's note:?If you snap an amazing telescope view of Uranus, or any other night sky object, and would like to share it for a possible story or image gallery, contact SPACE..com managing editor Tariq Malik at?tmalik@space.com.

World's largest oil trader flouts Iran sanctions

Denis Balibouse / Reuters

A sign is pictured in front of Vitol Group trading commodities company building in Geneva in this October 4, 2011 file photo.

By Luke Pachymuthu, Randy Fabi and Chen Aizhu, Reuters

SINGAPORE/BEIJING?- Vitol, the world's largest oil trader, is buying and selling Iranian fuel oil, undermining Western efforts to choke the flow of petrodollars to Tehran and put pressure on Iran's suspected nuclear weapons program.

Vitol last month bought 2 million barrels of fuel oil, used for power generation, from Iran and offered it to Chinese traders, Reuters established in interviews with 10 oil trading, industry and shipping sources in Southeast Asia, China and the Middle East. A spokesman for Vitol declined to comment.

Swiss-based Vitol is not obliged to comply with a ban imposed in July by the European Union on trading oil with Iran because Switzerland decided not to match EU and U.S. sanctions against Tehran.

The company earlier in the year stopped trading Iranian crude oil from its main European offices before the July 1 EU embargo deadline. But the trading sources said it has continued to deal in Iranian fuel oil from the Middle East.

The tale of the cargo of Iranian fuel oil involves tanker tracking systems being switched off, two ship-to-ship transfers, and blending of the oil with fuel from another source to alter the cargo's physical specification.

Privately-held Vitol SA is led by its long-time CEO Ian Taylor, a Briton. Taylor was among leading donors to Britain's ruling Conservative Party named in March by the Prime Minister's office as having dined with David Cameron at his private apartment in Downing Street amid the fall-out from a "cash for access" party funding scandal. Britain is a vociferous critic of Tehran's nuclear program and a leading advocate of the EU sanctions.

Swiss loophole
Vitol has said previously it is in compliance with sanctions against Iran, but has declined to say whether or not it would follow the strict EU regulations rather than Switzerland's.

Rival Swiss-based traders Glencore and Trafigura said in July they had halted all Iranian oil trade, even though the Swiss government opted against following measures imposed by Washington and Brussels.

The measures have halved OPEC member Iran's crude oil export revenues, devaluing the rial currency and bringing financial hardship to millions of Iranians.

On top of the EU ban, Iran's four biggest oil buyers - China, India, Japan and South Korea - have reduced their imports by at least a fifth to secure exemptions from the threat of U.S. financial sanctions on their companies.

Vitol last year earned record revenue of $297 billion, a near-five-fold increase since 2004. It does not reveal profits.

Fuel oil is a small part of its trading portfolio, accounting for $24 billion of revenue last year compared to $105 billion from crude and $100 billion from other refined products.

Profit margins on oil trade are typically very low, but traders said Iran's difficulties in finding buyers because of sanctions are likely to have made for a fat profit margin for trading its fuel oil.

Ship-to-ship
Vitol acquired the Iranian fuel oil early this month in a ship-to-ship transfer off Malaysia from a National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC) vessel, the Leadership, onto a Vitol-chartered tanker, the Ticen Ocean.

The Ticen Ocean was sub-contracted by Vitol for floating storage off the Malaysian port of Tanjung Pelepas from Titan Petrochemicals, a Hong Kong company which itself hired it from shipowner Frontline of Norway.

Frontline said Titan had told it the ship was not used to store Iranian oil. "Our only counterpart in this matter is Titan and they have said it is not correct that there has been Iranian oil on the boat," said Frontline CEO Jens Martin Jensen.

Titan did not return calls or emails seeking comment.

The Leadership left Iran's main oil export terminal at Kharg Island during the week of August 23, passing through the Strait of Malacca before disappearing from freight tracking systems off the Malaysian coast on September 4. Since sanctions were imposed, Iranian vessels have frequently switched off the onboard 'black-box' transponders used in the shipping industry to monitor vessel movements.

Industry sources in Tanjung Pelepas who monitor shipping transfer operations in Malaysian waters said Vitol later brought alongside another tanker, the Speranza, to replace the Ticen Ocean as floating storage. The Speranza, owned by China's Sino Shipping Holdings, arrived at Tanjung Pelepas on September 13-14, Reuters data shows.

Vitol also transferred some of its fuel oil from the Ticen Ocean between September 11-12 to another vessel, the Kamari I, according to Reuters data. That cargo was delivered to Vitol's storage terminal on the Malaysian island of Tanjung Bin, inside Tanjung Pelepas port, one trading source said.

'Special blend'
Traders said the company then blended the oil in storage with fuel oil sourced from Europe, calling it a "special blend" and offered it to Chinese traders. Reuters was given a copy of the specifications of the cargo on offer.

Vitol first asked a $30 premium to Singapore's benchmark 180-centistoke fuel oil price, said a Chinese industry executive who manages some of China's many small, independent refineries, known as teapots. That would have valued the 2-million-barrel cargo at about $250 million.

"Because the offer was too high, our people didn't really carry on the talks," the Chinese executive said. "Vitol also appeared not in a hurry to sell, so was not being aggressive."

Two Asian refinery buyers who were then offered the oil said the asking price was cut to a $12-$14 premium to Singapore benchmark prices, or around $175 million in total.

"Vitol is offering the cargo as a special blend to teapot refiners in Shandong," said a China-based trader. "No one's agreed to buy the Vitol cargo. I declined because I wasn't sure of the quality and specifications."

At the time of publication it is not known whether Vitol had agreed a deal to sell the oil.

Insurance
Vitol's use of the Ticen Ocean to store Iranian oil could put the tanker's insurance at risk. The vessel is insured by the North of England P&I Association.

The EU's oil embargo bans EU insurers who underwrite around 90 percent of the world's tanker fleet from providing cover for ships carrying Iranian oil.

Mike Salthouse, director of North Insurance Management, which acts as manager for the North of England P&I Association, said it would not provide cover for tankers storing or transporting Iranian oil.

"We would not expect to continue to insure any fleet actively engaged in this trade," he said, but declined comment specifically on the Ticen Ocean.

Senators Quiz Fundraising Firm About Work for Veterans Group ...

The Senate Finance Committee has asked Quadriga Art, a direct-marketing firm, to provide financial records about its ties to the Disabled Veterans National Foundation, a charity the committee is investigating because it has spent little money on services that directly help veterans.

Most of the money the veterans? group has raised from an extensive direct-mail operation has gone to pay bills at Quadriga and its subsidiary Brickmill Marketing Services. It owes? about $17-million to the two companies, a Quadriga spokeswoman said last month.

The finance committee?s letter asks Mark Schulhof, Quadriga Art?s chief executive, to provide details about business dealings among Quadriga, its related entities, and the veterans? charity from 2008 to 2011. It requests information about the goods and services the companies have offered, their cost, the revenue they have earned, and the money they have collected?and are still owed?by the charity.

CNN, which has broadcast numerous stories about charities affiliated with Quadriga, reported on Monday that California and New York regulators are also investigating the company.

A source close to the New York investigation confirmed that the attorney general?s office had sent subpoenas asking Quadriga about its business practices. A spokesman for the California attorney general?s office declined to comment on the report.

?Based on the recent media coverage, it is not surprising that we have received some inquiries from regulators,? Quadriga Art said in a statement. ?This is a regulated industry. We have received many inquiries over the past several decades, and we always cooperate with inquiries from industry regulators. We have always been found to have abided by all federal and state rules and regulations and have never been fined.?

Quadriga and Brickmill argue that a heavy investment was needed to get the veterans? charity off the ground and that it has helped the charity accumulate 2 million donors.? The veterans group also defended its spending?in a formal response to the finance committee, noting that it started in 2007, just before the recession hit, but that ?our supporter file is growing, and we expect the deficit to start being reduced.?

In a new video that Quadriga has distributed to clients, Mr. Schulhof says his company has not made any profit from DVNF?s business but believes it will make money in the long run.

?This is not making millions off the back of veterans,? he says. ?What this is is helping charities do good, helping charities build direct-mail files. Direct-mail files help charities sustain long-term survivability.?

CNN?s latest report highlights Quadriga Art?s direct-mail campaign for St. Bonaventure Indian Mission and School, in Thoreau, N.M., an effort that left the school in debt.

Minneapolis-St. Paul Tap Room Directory ? The Heavy Table ...

Sarah McGee / Heavy Table

In May 2011, the Minnesota Legislature passed H.F. 0703, popularly known as the Surly Bill, which allows for brewers to operate an on-sale establishment on their brewing premises. Since then, new brewing ventures have been popping up all over the cities, and a majority of them are including tap rooms in their build-out plans.

In an effort to organize the brewery news of note, and to let you know where you can drink a pint on site, we present The Heavy Table Minneapolis-St. Paul Tap Room Directory. We?ll regularly update this directory with news about the established tap rooms and those upcoming.

John Garland / Heavy Table

Excelsior Brewing Company
421 3rd St
Excelsior, MN 55331
952.474.7837

Hours: Thu-Fri 4pm-10pm, Sat 2pm-10pm

Tap Room Open Since: July 2012

Beer: You can taste four of Excelsior?s brews at their tap room. We prefer the crisp XLCR Pale Ale, followed closely by the light, refreshing Big Island Blond. They?ll also have available a weighty 8.0% IPA called Bridge Jumper and a seasonal. Currently, it?s a brown ale, soon it?ll be an Oktoberfest. Pints are $5-6 and growlers and other swag items are on sale as well.

Food: Nothing at the brewery, though there?s plenty of eating on Water Street. We like the Italian staples served up at Biella, where Excelsior is currently on tap.

Details: Located off the parking lot behind Water Street. Enter off Third (you?ll see Petunia?s Home & Garden shop at 421 from the street). It?s a pleasantly rowdy atmosphere in their warehouse-turned-brewery, with a couple stacks of bar Jenga and two small tap tables where you can sample their lineup. The brewer is Bob DuVernois, a former president of the Minnesota Craft Brewer?s Guild. He comes to Excelsior after a well-regarded stint at Great Waters in St. Paul, where he developed a reputation for excellent cask beers. A few firkins have come out of Excelsior so far, with a more regular program most certainly on the way.

Fulton Brewing
414 6th Ave N
Minneapolis, MN 55401
612.333.3208

Hours: Thu-Fri 3pm-10pm, Sat 12pm-10pm, Sun 11am-7pm, also opens 2 hrs. before Twins home games.

Tap Room Open Since: March 2012

Beer: Their two mainstays, Lonely Blonde and Sweet Child of Vine IPA, are always on tap, along with one or two others ? we especially like their lighter Ringer Pale Ale. The stack of barrels on the far wall previously held 2 Gingers Whiskey, and soon will hold some of Fulton?s malty, red Libertine ale. They also tap a new firkin every Thursday ? the way their Worthy Adversary Imperial Stout mellows in the cask is magical.

Food: A most agreeable assortment of food trucks set up shop in Fulton?s front lot ? check their website?s schedule. Or, if you want to sit down somewhere, it?s just a few blocks to Black Sheep Pizza and, soon, the brick-and-mortar Smack Shack.

Details:? A warehouse brewery for the Warehouse District. A five-minute walk from Target Field, it?s a terrific pre-game location at which to commiserate with fellow Twins fans. Heck, skip the first inning or two ? they?ll have the game on their TVs. Plus, you?re going to need another pint to watch that team. Growlers and other swag items are also available for purchase.

John Garland / Heavy Table

Harriet Brewing
3036 Minnehaha Ave
Minneapolis, MN 55406
612.225.2184

Hours: Wed-Fri 4pm-12am, Sat 1pm-12am

Tap Room Open Since: March 2012

Beer: Two or three of Harriet?s brews will be available. Their West Side Belgian IPA is the mainstay ? right now their lighter Marzen is the seasonal. Pints are $5.

Food: Harriet features a regular lineup of food trucks ? check their tap room calendar.? If you?re looking for something else in the neighborhood, we?d suggest Gandhi Mahal for some great Indian around the block.

Details: There may not be a tap room in the city that looks as comfortable in its own skin as Harriet?s. The brewery?s rear annex, cordoned off by a bright yellow wall full of local art, has a small corner stage featuring live music every night. Sip your beer on their patio while there?s still time and enjoy the downtown skyline view. Also be on the lookout for Harriet?s more involved festivals (including Rauchfest Sept. 29 and Sound Unseen Oct. 10-13). Growlers are available for purchase in the small tasting room at the front of the building. Parking is available in the gravel lot to the left of the brewery.

John Garland / Heavy Table

Indeed Brewing Company
711 15th Ave NE
Minneapolis, MN 55413
612.843.5090

Hours: Thu-Fri 3-10, Sat 11am-10pm

Tap Room Open Since: August 2012

Beer: You?ll find three or four beers on tap at Indeed, with a couple more in casks. We get a kick out of their Daytripper Pale Ale ? that rush of citrusy hops on the nose is mesmerizing. Also, their Midnight Ryder American Black Ale is silky with a deep roast character and a crisp, bitter finish. 750-ml bottles are available for purchase at the brewery for around $6. Six packs of cans will be made available in retail stores sometime this fall / winter.

Food:?Food trucks are always scheduled to be on hand?? check the schedule on Indeed?s website.

Details:?Indeed Brewing is the first in a rush of breweries scheduled to open in Northeast Minneapolis in 2012-2013. Josh Bischoff is the brewer, coming off an award-filled tenure at Town Hall. The Solar Arts building delivers a great neighborhood atmosphere for the brewery. The space is like an artist?s studio meets old-school club room. Check out the tables, emblazoned with signatures from the guest registry of the old Miller Publishing Group. The room has a shuffleboard table, and a small patio flanks the building facing the railroad tracks.

Lift Bridge Brewing
1900 Tower Dr
Stillwater, MN 55082
888.430.2337

Hours: Tue-Thu 5pm-8pm, Fri 12pm-8pm, Sat 12pm-5pm

Tap Room Open Since: September 2011

Beer: You?ll find six of Lift Bridge?s brews on tap. You know and love the citrusy haze of Farm Girl Saison. We also quite like the spectacularly resinous Hop Dish IPA and the brilliant, crisp Pathway Pilsner. Expect a couple seasonals to be on hand. Right now, it?s a lighter Oktoberfest. This winter, they expect to roll out a series of stouts ? milk, oyster, and Irish coffee. Also on tap: house-made root beer (ask for a taste, it?s incredible). Pints are $4, flights are $6-9, and growlers are available as well.

Food: No food trucks out in Stillwater, but there?s plenty of solid eating within a couple minutes? drive. We recommend the laid-back Patriots Tavern for soups / sandwiches, the same goes for Chilkoot Cafe & Cyclery (especially their more elegant dinner menu), Roma Restaurant for good old-fashioned Italian favorites, and Phil?s Tara Hideaway for great Mediterranean.

Details: There?s no better way to wait out the Highway 36 rush hour than having a pint at Lift Bridge. They?ve built out a small bar that seats about 10 in the brewery?s front reception room, with a few picnic tables for extra seating. Though they?ve won the people?s choice Golden Firkin at Happy Gnome?s Firkin Fest multiple times, it?s somewhat surprising that they don?t already have cask ales available at the tap room. It?s in the works, though. They already have a beer engine and will begin to feature rotating casks in the near future. If you want their cask beer now, you may find some at Ngon Bistro, Republic, or Groveland Tap.

John Garland / Heavy Table

Summit Brewing Company
910 Montreal Cir
St. Paul, MN 55102
651.265.7800

Hours: Fridays, 3-8pm

Tap Room Opening: September 28, 2012

Beer: You?ll be able to sample 10 or so of Summit?s brews. All of their year-round beers will be poured, along with current releases from the Unchained series when available (the Belgian Abbey Ale is currently out of stock), as well as some special casks and limited runs from their pilot brewing system. Pints will be $5, with flights of four beers for $7.

Food: They will feature a rotating mix of food trucks during drinking hours. Barrio will be on hand for the inaugural Friday.

Details: After a soft opening for family and friends last Friday, the venerable St. Paul brewery will begin hosting open tap room hours this week. The large Rathskeller hall is frequently used for events and opened up to nonprofits for fundraising, so they?re keeping hours limited to Fridays for now. They haven?t changed the space much, just built out the bar a touch. In November, they?ll add a brewery tour on Fridays at 1pm, which will let out as tap room hours begin.

UPCOMING TAP ROOMS:

612Brew
945 Broadway St NE
Minneapolis, MN 55413

Expected Opening: Late 2012

Details So Far: Six blocks from Indeed Brewing in Northeast Minneapolis sits the Broadway building, home of the upcoming 612Brew tap house and brewery. The preliminary design sketches promise a beautiful build out, with old brick and exposed beams contrasting the steel brewing vessels. The open floor plan looks to leave very little distinction between brewery and tap room space ? you?ll be sitting mere feet from their tanks. It?s being designed with room for concerts and other events very much in mind.

A selection of Indian food will accompany their brews (co-owner Adit Kalra?s family owns Tandoor) so they?ll have snacks available even when the food trucks have packed up for the winter. Their initial brew lineup looks to include a Pale Ale, a fully bodied hoppy Rye Ale, and an American Black Ale that will only be available at the tap room. Expect a rotating group of seasonals as well.

Dangerous Man Brewing
1300 2nd St NE
Minneapolis, MN 55413
612.206.2626

Expected Opening: Late 2012-early 2013

Details So Far: Dangerous Man looks to join Indeed and 612Brew as cornerstones of the Northeast ?Brew District.? Their tap room license was approved by the City of Minneapolis on September 24. The walls have been framed, the ceiling painted, and the concrete floor stained. It looks closer to opening every week, it seems.

They have no plans to release the product to tap or retail accounts, so if you want their unique brews, you?ll have to visit the tap house. They?ll be featuring six ever-changing selections of one-off, small batch stuff, so expect lots of experimentation with ingredients and styles.

HammerHeart Brewing Company
Lino Lakes, MN
651.964.2160

Expected Opening: 2013, beginning production hopefully by the end of 2012

Details So Far: The guys behind HammerHeart envision an old Norse drinking hall feel for their brewery?s tap room. Outside will be a gravel patio with a fire pit, enclosed by pine trees ? a north woods retreat in Lino Lakes. Set to begin pouring sometime next year, they refer to their beers as ?hoppy, smoked, and sometimes oaked. Unfiltered and balanced.? They will generally stick to English styles ? no Belgians or German Lagers ? and will have six on tap. If the beers are ?sometimes oaked? we wouldn?t be surprised to see them develop a regular casking program like the others.

Steel Toe Brewing
4848 W 35th?St
St. Louis Park, MN 55416
952.955.9965

Current Growler Sale Hours: Tue-Thu 3-5pm, Fri 5:30-7:30pm, Sat 10am-12pm

Expected Opening: Late 2012-early 2013

Details So Far: Currently waiting on the license and finalizing build-out details.

Surly Brewing?Company

Expected Opening: 2013-2014? Site may be finalized by end of 2012.

Details So Far: Surly has selected the architecture firm HGA to design its planned 60,000-square-foot, $20 million ?Destination Brewery.? They are looking at seven to 10 acres for their complex, which will include a bar, restaurant, beer garden, and event center. The site search has been also been reportedly narrowed down to just a handful, including a few potential spots in Minneapolis and Brooklyn Center.

Obama and Romney use China as a campaign argument

WASHINGTON (AP) ? In an election that may be decided on the strength of the American economy, President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney are looking to China to score political points as they compete for political support from working-class voters.

But both candidates also are taking some heat about their dealings with the communist superpower.

Republicans accuse Obama of failing to follow through on promises to crack down on China's trade policies. Democrats, meanwhile, raise questions about Romney's leadership of a private equity firm that invested in companies operating in China.

Beyond politics, there are real policy differences that could have a dramatic impact on the relationship between the United States and the country that is the largest foreign holder of U.S. Treasury debt.

Romney and Obama campaign officials set aside time at their respective political conventions to meet privately with China's ambassador to the United States. But publicly, both candidates are putting aside diplomatic niceties and talking tough.

The White House on Monday filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization over Chinese subsidies to its auto and auto parts industry, the latest in a series of actions dating back to 2009 to protest what U.S. manufacturers say are the unfair advantages China gives its own industries. The move came four days after Romney launched an advertising campaign accusing the president of allowing American manufacturing jobs to be lost to the Asian power.

At a campaign stop in Cincinnati, Obama charged that Romney made money from companies that outsourced jobs to China while running the private equity firm Bain Capital.

"You can't stand up to China when all you've done is send them our jobs," Obama said. "You can talk a good game. But I like to walk the walk, not just talk the talk. And my experience has been waking up every single day doing everything I can to make sure that American workers get a fair shot in the global economy."

Romney shot back in a statement accusing Obama of ignoring China for too long.

"Campaign-season trade cases may sound good on the stump, but it is too little, too late for American businesses and middle-class families," Romney said. "President Obama's credibility on this issue has long since vanished."

The issue hits home among working-class voters in manufacturing swing states such as Ohio, where Obama has gained recently in polls. And American voters don't seem to like China very much.

An NBC/Wall Street Journal poll conducted in July found that 62 percent of registered voters consider China more of an adversary, while just 25 percent see the country as an ally. About 86 percent of adults were at least somewhat concerned about how trade relations with China would impact the U.S. economy, Gallup found in February.

Romney is promising an aggressive course on China. In particular, he has vowed to issue an executive order in his first day in office labeling China a currency manipulator, a designation that would trigger negotiations between the two countries and could ultimately lead to U.S. trade sanctions against China.

The designation is opposed by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Jon Huntsman, the former GOP presidential candidate and onetime U.S. ambassador to China, who said it would spark a trade war that would damage U.S. businesses and threaten China's willingness to buy U.S. Treasury debt.

Complaining about China's manipulation of its currency is popular among both Democrats and Republicans, and it's a chorus Obama himself joined during his first run for the White House and has renewed since then. In a 2008 campaign position paper, Obama vowed to use "all diplomatic means" to put China's currency on a fairer footing.

But Obama has repeatedly refused to brand China a currency manipulator in a report that the Treasury Department is required to send to Congress twice a year. Past administrations also have been unwilling to take that step. China owns $1.16 trillion in U.S. Treasury securities, making it the largest foreign holder of Treasury debt.

But for now at least, Romney is not backing down. Over the weekend, he ran an advertisement across eight swing states accusing Obama of failing to crack down on China's behavior. And in his weekly podcast, Romney said that "in 2008, candidate Obama promised to take China 'to the mat.' But since then, he's let China run all over us."

Obama countered with a TV spot focused on Romney's past relationship with China. While Romney headed Bain Capital in the 1990s, the firm invested in several companies that operated in China. The Romney campaign has insisted that the Chinese-based factories did not supplant U.S. manufacturing jobs.

Much of the evidence is based on U.S. Securities and Exchange documents from that period, providing only sparse information on the China-based activities of these firms. But records do raise questions about what appear in some cases to be a broadening reliance on Chinese factories and workers by several firms targeted by Bain in the 1990s for investments and takeover bids.

Romney's posture on China's economic expansion was far less confrontational when he headed Bain Capital. In March 1998, while attending a forum on the future of U.S. cities, he extolled China's workplaces, which have in recent years come under fire for exploiting Chinese workers.

"I went to a factory of 5,000 workers making bread makers and so forth," said Romney, then the CEO of Bain. He said they were "working, working, working, as hard as they could, at rates of roughly 50 cents an hour. They cared about their jobs; they wouldn't even look up as we walked by."

On Monday, Romney called for a "crackdown on nations that cheat like China. That's killing jobs."

Free Online Marketing Tools ? The Lowdown by Trevor Taylor

Free Online Marketing Tools refers to any online software or portal that can be used to create, build, manage and promote an online business within the Internet marketing arena. It is true to say that almost every job completed by any piece of software could actually be done by hand. The software is typically designed to automate the process and therefore save considerable time for the user. I decided to create an online business using only free online marketing tools and resources from around the Internet.

I began by making a list of all the tools I expected I would need to create a professional looking website that would be attractive and easy for my visitors to navigate. I had already researched my subject matter and considered that my new website would be reasonably unique, although that is not necessary as the Internet provides such a huge market. I had in mind to begin with such tools as an HTML editor, a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) utility that would allow me to create source code, not just for a complete website but any little snippets I might require along the way. I would also need a decent image editor, or maybe more than just one, to create the unique visual effects that would add the attractive qualities to my website. I found a quality meta tag generator, a favicon maker, a button generator, text editor and one or two other free online marketing tools and I was good to go.

Now I?m ready to introduce one of the greatest free online marketing tools of them all! I decided to present my new website in Blog format. There are many reasons I chose to do that. There was a time when blogs looked very basic and uninspiring, but they served a purpose and the search engined loved them, as they were typically updated with new information often on a daily basis. Nowadays, with new updates, choice of skins and a plethora of plug-ins that will do almost anything, blogs can look much the same as regular websites, but they are easier to update, and the search engines still love them. Of the blog platforms available I chose WordPress, because of the high levels of versatility and support, and proceeded to download the latest version. WordPress boast a 5 minute installation for their blog software, and I can verify that is all it takes.

Within 5 minutes I had uploaded the blog software to my vacant domain, albeit a bare and uninteresting website, but I was ready and keen to begin work on the creative aspects of building my site.. The process that would, I hoped, set it apart from the rest. I perused the hundreds of different themes available for the WordPress platform, and in keeping with my desire to build my online business using free online marketing tools only, I chose a gorgeous free theme, the layout of which I considered would suit my needs perfectly.

Typically, when writing posts to a blog, they will appear ?on top? only until you write your next post. And therefore your latest post will always be the first to be seen by visitors. However, I wanted to write an introduction to my website that would stay there, above the fold, and guess what? I was able to find a WordPress plug-in that would do just that for me and keep my introduction post ?sticky? and always in full view. I took my time with that first introduction post, making sure it was informative, attractive and using images created using another of the free online marketing tools.. my favorite image editor.

I updated my new website every day with new and original content, using a free spell checker and an online thesaurus portal to help to keep my posts fresh and interesting to visitors. I added a favicon, which I thought might make my site look more professional and some fancy buttons linking to other pages on my domain, and I included one or two videos in my posts, all using free online marketing tools I might add.. My website had cost me nothing so far, but now I had to consider the promotional aspects of my online business and make sure I started getting visitors, without which, the whole project would be wasted. I found a great back-linking tool that had my new site listed in the Google search engine directory within 24 hours, and an online submitter that notified many other search engines of my new site.

There are many ways that free online marketing tools may be employed to promote and get any website noticed, which in turn will bring the targeted visitors that represents life?s blood. Article writing for example is a great tool to promote if used correctly. Website directories, search engines and free online advertising sites are all great ways to improve a website?s presence on the Internet. Twitter, Facebook and other social bookmarking sites can help too, and they are all free to join. There are a number of press release websites that are free to join and tell the world about new projects. It is difficult to pinpoint which of these free online marketing tools work and which don?t but promotion in any form can?t be bad, so I spend a little time on each.

Once you have a website that is attracting visitors, you can consider how you can monetize your online business and turn those visitors into profit. Again, the methods available, affiliate programs, selling advertising space on your site, sponsored search marketing etc. are all free to join methods of making your website profitable and many of these companies will gladly provide you with the free online marketing tools to help promote their links on your pages.

So here I was, one month into my new project and it was earning money. Not a great deal but there was a long way to go and I knew it would only improve as I added more content to my website. The great thing was, I had achieved it all by simply using a variety of free online marketing tools from around the Internet. Yes, there are some that don?t work too good and indeed there are those that don?t work at all, but if you are prepared to invest a little time on your favorite search engine, it is possible to find free tools to help with almost every aspect of Internet marketing. Good luck with your endeavors.

NASA investing in self-building spaceship research by VR-Zone.com

NASA is funding research for a method that will let a spacecraft construct itself using built-in 3D printers, allowing potentially massive ships with a greater degree of complexity than has currently been possible.

?

The US space agency has invested $100,000 in SpiderFab, a firm that is looking at the feasibility of launching a 3D printer with necessary materials into space, and getting it to construct a spaceship in the cosmos.

?

The benefit of such an approach is that there would be no need to worry about designing the ship to withstand lift-off, which complicates current design processes and greatly increases the cost. Current ships also need to be able to fold up, given space limitations, which would not be an issue for a vehicle assembled in the heavens.

?

?

The concept has so much potential that NASA believes such self-assembling ships could eventually be made to look for raw materials for assembly and repair in space itself, such as from asteroids or even the debris of broken satellites.

?

The technology, if developed in a feasible way, could lead to self-constructing satellites, telescopes, spacecraft, and even gigantic space stations. Printers in a publisher's office on Earth might be printing science-fiction, but 3D printers in space could end up printing the real thing.

Illuminated Spider Cloches | Family Chic by Camilla Fabbri ?2009 ...

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 2012 | Comments: 7

I was thrilled to be given the opportunity to test Plaid?s new Martha Stewart glass paint and adhesive silkscreens (available at Michaels). I received a huge box of glass paints, silkscreens, tools, and total creative freedom to make whatever I wanted. We?ve got Halloween on the brain around here, so I couldn?t help myself from making something a little creepy. Take a look at these spider cloches and check out how easy they are to make?

www.family-chic.com

Transform plain cylinder vases into spooky spider cloches.

www.family-chic.com

Use your cloche to hold anything you like. We chose plastic spiders, but you could also use small pumpkins, photos, leaves, flowers ? whatever catches your eye.

www.family-chic.com

With the flip of a switch, these light up for evening use.

For this project I used:

Plaid Supplies:

  • Martha Stewart Crafts?? Metallic Opaque Glass Paint, Black Nickel
  • Martha Stewart Crafts? Glass Silkscreen
  • Martha Stewart Crafts? Glass Paint Stenciling Tools

    Other Supplies:

  • Foam paint brush
  • Two glass cylinder vases
  • Two drawer pulls
  • Two battery-operated tea lights
  • High strength hot glue
  • Removable adhesive putty
  • Plastic spiders

?

www.family-chic.com

For this project I wanted the tops of the cloches to look like they were capped in metal, so I chose to work with Martha Stewart black nickel paint and a delicate filigree-style silkscreen.

www.family-chic.com

Clean and dry vase. Turn vase upside down and apply adhesive silkscreen to the glass at about 1-inch down from the base. Using the foam pouncer (a cylindrical sponge perfect for this project and also by the Martha Stewart Craft brand), dab on a layer of paint. Apply a second coat if necessary.

www.family-chic.com

Remove silkscreen while paint is still wet. Allow to dry and continue the pattern all the way around the circumference of the vase.

www.family-chic.com

Using a brush, paint the base of the vase and take the paint down the sides to meet the stencil line.

www.family-chic.com

This is what your project should look like at this stage.

www.family-chic.com

Hollywood Fights Back at "Stand Up to Cancer" Telethon | Celebrity ...

Posted Saturday September 8, 2012 1:30 PM GMT

Pooling their efforts for a worthy cause, Hollywood's A-list came out on Friday for the Stand Up to Cancer telethon (September 7).

Showing her support on the red carpet, Sofia Vergara wore a black Stand Up to Cancer t-shirt with jeans. Minka Kelly opted for a black tank top emblazoned with the event logo, dark skinny jeans, and black heels.

The star-studded third annual event was started to raise money for cancer research. The organization is partnered with the American Association for Cancer Research.

Opening the show, Tom Hanks succinctly explained the mission of the event, saying, "Let's build a world where cancer is no more."

The program was partly founded by "Spider Man" producer Laura Ziskin, who died last year after battling breast cancer for seven year. Gwyneth Paltrow served as an executive producer for the event.

Reminding everyone of the urgency of the goal, Julia Roberts told the audience that one in two men and one in three women will get cancer in their lifetimes and that cancer "kills a child every four hours in this country." She continued, "This is why we have to support Stand Up to Cancer. This extraordinary movement has assembled dream teams of the best doctors and scientists collaborating at a frantic pace to save our lives."

Also attending were Michael Douglas, Matt Damon, Robert Pattinson, Justin Timberlake, Eric Stonestreet, Ty Burrell, Chelsea Handler, and Gabby Douglas. Taylor Swift, Tim McGraw, Alicia Keys, and Coldplay performed.
