Introducing Therapy That Works | World of Psychology

Introducing Therapy That WorksPsychotherapy is as effective ? and in many cases, more effective ? than medications. Yet psychotherapy remains on the decline, while people run to their pharmacy to fill their psychiatric scripts.

Despite the progress we?ve made over the past two decades to help people better understand psychotherapy ? what it is, how it works, and why it?s effective for some but not for others ? there are still a lot of misconceptions about therapy.

Pharmaceutical companies have deep advertising budgets to ensure you (and your doctor) get a lot of information and marketing about their drugs. There is no equivalent in the psychotherapy world.

That?s why I?m pleased to introduce Therapy That Works with Marla W. Deibler, Psy.D. This blog discuss common therapy issues, help correct therapy misconceptions, and talk about the value of evidence-based treatment. Evidence-based treatment (EBT) refers to treatments that have a solid backing in research.

Marla W. Deibler, Psy.D., is a clinical psychologist and nationally-recognized expert in anxiety disorders and the obsessive-compulsive spectrum, including trichotillomania and other body-focused repetitive behaviors, obsessive-compulsive disorder, hoarding, and tic disorders. She is the Founder and Executive Director of The Center for Emotional Health of Greater Philadelphia in New Jersey. You can learn more about her here.

Please give Dr. Deibler a warm Psych Central welcome over on her blog, Therapy That Works, now.

Turkey seizes five tons of marijuana near Iran border

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkish police seized five tons of marijuana with a street value of at least $2 million near the border with Iran on Tuesday and officials said they were investigating the involvement of Kurdish militants.

Turkish security sources say drug trafficking is a major source of income for the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which took up arms 28 years ago with the aim of carving out a Kurdish state in the southeastern border region with Iran and Iraq.

"Our security forces are investigating PKK links to the 144 sacks of marijuana seized today," an official at the governor's office in the city of Van, where the drugs were seized, said on condition of anonymity.

The PKK - designated a terrorist group by Turkey, the United States and European Union - has in the past denied any links to the drugs trade. In media interviews, its leaders have claimed it does not allow its members to use narcotics.

In 2009, U.S. authorities named several senior members of the group as suspected narcotics traffickers, freezing their assets and banning U.S. citizens from doing business with them.

Turkey is an important route for drug trafficking to Europe, since it is both a producer and an importer, mainly from Syria and Iran.

Turkey seized around 47 tons of marijuana in 2011, a 50 percent rise on the previous year, according to Turkish police figures. Van and the commercial capital Istanbul were among the cities with the highest seizures.

For Mars rover Curiosity, at last, it's dinnertime. On the menu: dirt.

It's period of painstaking preparations over, the Mars rover Curiosity has at long last ingested a sample of soil for analysis by its on-board chemistry lab. That's what it came 352 million miles for.

By Pete Spotts / October 18, 2012

This photo taken Oct. 15, shows part of the small pit or bite created when Mars rover Curiosity collected its second scoop of Martian soil at a sandy patch called 'Rocknest.' The bright particle near the center of this image was assessed by the mission's science team to be native Martian material rather than spacecraft debris.

In a mission where progress so far is being measured in an excruciating series of baby steps, the rover has for the first time moved a soil sample from the Martian surface to CheMin ? one of two mini laboratories inside Curiosity's chassis that are expected to reveal the minerals that comprise the red planet's ubiquitous dust.

Such a seemingly simple feat has been a long time coming, notes John Grotzinger, a planetary geologist at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena and the Mars Science Laboratory's project scientist.

Researchers have measured soil properties beginning with the Viking landers in the mid 1970s and with each lander since ? each in different locations. This has yielded the observation that "there's something about the soil so far that's been very generic to Mars," he says.

"What's really exciting about this sample that just got dumped into CheMin" and later will be scrutinized by a second lab package on the rover "is that they are going to be able to analyze once and for all the mineral composition" of this material "that swirls around the planet," he says.

It's the first test of CheMin's ability to uncover the elements in the soil grains and identify minerals in them following the rover's 352-million-mile, nearly nine-month journey to Mars. The mission's goal is to determine if Gale Crater and its towering, central Mt. Sharp could have hosted microbial life early in the planet's history.

Central to that task is the ability to deliver samples to CheMin and the second internal lab package, SAM. SAM analyzes gases from the atmosphere and from heated samples of soil and rock to hunt for organics that would signal a hospitable ancient habitat.

To that end, engineers have spent the last two weeks gathering two scoops full of soil to scrub out the inside of the sample delivery system, removing any remaining contaminants from Earth.

The first scrubbing session went well. But engineers aborted the delivery system's second silty "bath" when images of the depression the scoop left in the soil revealed a small, shiny fleck that reminded the team of what it previously dubbed "shmutz" ? loose bits of plastic that came from the rover itself.

The sample-delivery system, known as CHIMRA, might not take kindly to ingesting a bit of rover detritus as part of the cleaning process. So, wary that the soil in the scoop itself might hide another piece of shmutz, the team dumped the soil and took a closer look at the shiny fleck in the depression.

After some scientific chin-scratching, a strong consensus emerged among the science team that the fleck actually originated on Mars, Grotzinger says. In a stroke, the fleck shifted from an object of concern to an object of scientific interest.

Sometime in the next few days, the science team will reposition the rover so it can use ChemCam, atop the rover's mast, to zap the fleck with its laser and figure out what it's made of, Dr. Grotzinger says.

The fleck is only about 1 millimeter across. Reseachers speculate that it could be a tiny chip of mineral cleaved by the wind-driven movement of pebbles at the site. Or it could represent a mineral that formed naturally in the space between larger grains of sand and soil.

"It probably represents a science opportunity rather than an engineering threat," Grotzinger said at a briefing Thursday.

Once the team put the fleck on its scientific agenda, it finished up the housekeeping chores with a third scoopful of soil that is now working its way through CheMin. SAM could see its first sample next week.

"The most important thing about our mobile laboratory is that it eats dirt; that's what we live on," Grotzinger says.

And with confirmation that the latest sample has been safely delivered to CheMin, Curiosity's engineers and scientist can now bid the rover bon appetit.

LTE-enabled iPad mini and fourth-gen iPad will come to Sprint

iPad mini and fourth-gen iPad will come to Sprint

When the cellular iPad mini and 4th-generation iPad launch next month, Sprint will find itself standing next to Verizon and AT&T in offering iPads for use on their LTE network. With the launch of the 3rd-generation iPad in March of this year, Sprint was left out when LTE compatibility was announced. Sprint confirmed iPad mini and fourth-gen availability in a press release today: "Sprint (NYSE: S) today announced that in the coming weeks it will offer iPad mini and fourth generation iPad. Sprint will offer these new iPads with a range of attractive data plans that will allow customers to connect to its 4G LTE network."

Sprint and Verizon will share models of both devices that run on either carrier?s CDMA and LTE networks. AT&T will have a separate GSM and LTE model. Both the CDMA and GSM models will support international 3G and LTE bands, meaning that the Sprint and Verizon iPads will still be compatible with cellular networks when traveling abroad. The price for the cellular models of iPad mini start at $459 for the 16GB model, moving up to $559 and $659 for the 32GB and 64GB models, respectively. For the 4th generation iPad, the cellular models start at $629 for the 16GB cellular model, with the 32GB costing $729, and the 64GB priced at $829. The cellular models of both the iPad mini and the 4th-generation iPad will launch mid-November.

Any takers? Which carrier are you siding with?

Here's To The Death Of ?Personal Branding? On The Internet ...

I?m not exactly sure who made being a ?personal brand? a thing on the Internet, but I?d really like to sit down with them and ask them why they thought that it was a good idea. You see, an entire ecosystem of people looking to make money have cropped up around this notion of helping people become a ?brand.? Honestly, it?s bull, and I?d like to see it stop. Why is it bull? Because unless you?re Kim Kardashian and have a line of clothes or stinky fragrances, you are not a brand. You are a person.

What is personal branding anyways? Here?s what the always-trustworthy Wikipedia says:

Personal branding is, for some people, a description of the process whereby people and their careers are marked as brands. It has been noted that while previous self-help management techniques were about self-improvement, the personal branding concept suggests instead that success comes from self-packaging.

Got it? Personal branding is all about the person, as in it?s an extremely self-centered thing that doesn?t help anyone but yourself. I?m totally fine with self-help tactics, and I?ve used some myself over the years, but not in such a public way that projected douchebagness.

Using your own Twitter account isn?t ?work?, and if you feel like it is?I feel sorry for you.

Are you a brand?

If you?ve ever asked yourself ?Am I a brand?? then the answer is no. You are a person. A person who breathes air like the rest of us, uses the Internet like the rest of us and maybe tweets some awesome stuff. You are not a brand, don?t need a brand management team, don?t need to take personal branding classes and surely don?t ever need to become a ?personal branding expert.?

Personal branding has become a topic for every other South By Southwest session and for a zillion e-books that sell for $4.99 a piece. It?s fake, it?s not productive and it?s actually holding all of us back from being actual humans. A book can?t teach you how to be yourself, only you can do that. Once you?re comfortable in your own skin and expressing the lovely thoughts that are in your head, you are not automatically a brand. You?re just you.

What?s happening right now is that people who have found a way to get a bunch of Twitter followers, make a fancy website and write a book are preying upon people who are self conscious and shy. You know who I?m talking about, it?s the ?social media gurus? and the ?experts? who have this fantastic brand and you don?t know who they are, but you feel like you should?because they?re built that illusion. You don?t need a fancy website to get the job you want and you certainly don?t need a personal branding expert to help you set up an Internet profile to assert that you are indeed a worthy member of society. It?s all bull.

Who IS a brand, then?

Look, if your job is really about being you, meaning you?re in movies or having a clothing line, then you probably have PR people and a ?team? that handles your image. That means keeping you out of trouble, shushing you aside at the bar when you?ve had too many, and otherwise making sure that everyone in the world thinks you?re the bomb. That?s a crappy way to live but that?s why ?celebrities? make the big bucks. You?re not a celebrity, I?m not a celebrity, so we don?t need a personal branding expert to tell us what to do, right?

What has happened over the past year on sites like Twitter is that celebrities are breaking down the walls between them and the ?rest of us.? Ashton Kutcher tweets his personal thoughts, and just about everyone who has ever stepped foot on TV has a million followers. I think it?s a damn good thing, even if their ?handlers? are still involved. We?re all people, we?re all here on this earth to make a difference.

Coke is a brand, JLo?s butt is kind of a brand, but you are not a brand.

Be Yourself

Being yourself might just be one of the toughest things to do in the world. People want to be friends with everyone, have everyone like them and otherwise be who they?re not. It?s honestly the people who figured out one day that being them was fun who are successful in life. They?re weird, odd, loud, quiet, sexy, ugly, bald, rude, or funny and they don?t care what other people think. I don?t think that Box?s CEO Aaron Levie took a class in ?personal branding?, I just think he?s cool with being himself.

Folks, you don?t need a ?handle? on the web and a tagline to get noticed for the things you have to say or share. All you have to do is be consistently you, as difficult as that might be for you. Don?t let other people tell you what to be, how to act or what to share. Also, don?t be a purposeful contrarian to get attention either, unless that?s really how you are.

People are like snowflakes, but by making yourself become a ?brand?, you?re turning yourself into a nondescript pile of dog poo. Don?t do it, you?re worth more than that.

Be you. Be real. Please.

Make your own difference, not someone else?s. The book on ?personal branding? isn?t for you, it?s for someone who hasn?t read this post yet.

Chiropractic seen as 'alternative medicine' | Kuwait Times

p29x Chiropractic seen as ?alternative medicine?

Dr Chet Collins

?KUWAIT: A chiropractor ?s is a rare profession anywhere. Many chiropractors in Kuwait are expatriate doctors. Dr Chet Collins, who comes regularly to Kuwait from the United States under a contrac t signed with Missoni Hotel, is one of them. He treats Kuwaiti patients at the Six Senses Resort and Spa located at the Missoni Hotel. Currently based in Bali, Indonesia, Collins visits on a quar terly basis. ?I stay usually between 10 days to two weeks. I focus on treatment and motion therapy. I do a lot of one on one restoration therapy,? he said.

Chiropractic is a health care profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disorders of the neuromusculoskeletal system and the effects of these disorders on general health. It is generally categorized as complementary and part of an alternative medicine system although some hospitals around the world regularly assign chiroprac tic doctors in mainstream hospitals. ?I t?s about physical problems. Things are sometimes structurally not work ing and people can have long term mild or severe chronic pains. We step in when they are unable to solve the problem even after having resorted to all kinds of medicines, therapists, massages, yoga and so on. When their condition still persists, that is when we tend to work and intervene so that we could help remove the pain,? he said.

Collins, who obtained a degree in chiropractic in the US, said his primar y function was to look at the functions of the muscles and ligaments to make sure that everything is moving correctly and as required. Professionals like him are generally called chiropractors. ?Chiropractors? profession has grown significantly in the US and Europe over the years. Chiropractic doctors work in hospitals in close coordination with neurologists and or thopedics. The focus in chiropractic is more hands-on and the conservative therapist manipulates the body in ways so as to make it move better,? he explained. When something is broken and needs repair or surgical inter vention, or if it is a neurological issue, then surgery or medication is advised. ? There is a large disparity, a grey area, which is not covered completely by medical community.

Some people consider chiropractics only as an alternative because the mainstream has always been the medical community as we know it. Though it is an alternative for some medical practitioners, but for some conditions/disease, the primary appropriate route is a chiropractitioner. Many problems in human beings are mechanical or lifestyle issues. ?You may have a chronic disease and at that moment in time you need medication to deal with it, but you can also achieve results overtime if you focus on lifestyle changes, such as your diet and overall health and fitness. If you improve all of those, then you may have a positive effect, but it may not happen fast enough. So, what we try to do is to emphasize improving selfcare and doing all those things that make your body and your mind strong and resilient. It is possible that you may not even need all that medication in the long run anymore. Your problems may become smaller and the need for inter vention in pharmaceutical side could become less.

That is because you would be returning to normal health.? Just like the mainstream doc tors, chiroprac tors also ask patients? medical histor y before embark ing upon medication. They ask patients why they wanted to see a doctor in the first place. ? Then as I hear them, from my experience and knowledge about the human physiology, I know where to look first or what the problem could possibly be. We determine that and find out what is it that is causing the pain. I find those problems with my hands, I can feel it with my hands, but I need full motion to begin with.? Chiropractors do not issue any prescriptions or medicines for their patients, unlike medical doctors. ?We studied medicine and related pharmaceutical drugs but we do not prescribe medicines,? he said. Patients who undergo chiropractic procedures can expec t 95 percent success in resolving their medical condition.

Proper Timing Is Essential

Taking the ideal dinner with the proper nutrients at various times of the day is essential. For example a high-carbohydrate however low fat dinner is called for after morning training given that the body is always all set to soak up even more of the carbohydrates for body structure and regrowth. This is often generated by the insulin sensitizing outcome.

This change over the day as smaller of the fast-acting and high-octane gas is needed. This is because there suffices glycogen currently in store because the body has not exercised for a size of time given that morning. This as a result requires that even more protein subject matter be availed at dinner to make it easy for protein synthesis and healing. The dinner needs to as a result have even more of protein and fat subject matter however low of carbohydrates. The answer as a result is to lower the amount of fast-acting carbohydrates and increasing the amount of fat and protein in between post-worked dishes and the last dinner of the day.
This is a smart strategy of obtaining muscular tissues without adding even more fats to the body.

Turkey condemns U.N. inaction as Syrian conflict deepens

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan rebuked the U.N. Security Council for inaction over Syria on Saturday as war intensified across the country, saying the world body of superpowers was repeating mistakes that led to massacres in Bosnia in the 1990s.

President Bashar al-Assad's forces used air strikes and artillery to bombard insurgents on several fronts in the 19-month-old conflict, which risks dragging in regional powers with no sign of a diplomatic breakthrough.

Turkey - increasingly entangled after having intercepted a Syrian airliner carrying what it said were Russian-made munitions for the Syrian army, infuriating Moscow and Damascus - has led calls for intervention, including no-fly zones enforced by foreign aircraft to stop deadly air raids by Assad's forces.

But there is little chance of U.N. support for robust action. China insists any solution to Syria's crisis must come from within while Russia has said many Syrians still support Assad. Western nations meanwhile are loath to commit to any military action that could touch off a regional sectarian war.

"The U.N. Security Council has not intervened in the human tragedy that has been going on in Syria for 20 months, despite all our efforts," Erdogan told a conference in Istanbul attended by dignitaries including Arab League Secretary General Nabil Elaraby. "There's an attitude that encourages, gives the green light to Assad to kill tens or hundreds of people every day."

The bloodshed has worsened markedly in the past two months although neither side has been able to gain a distinct advantage, with government force relying heavily on air power and artillery to batter the rebels.

Combat has been reported nationwide but the crucial strategic battles are being fought in an arc through western Syria, where most of the population lives.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu was expected to meet U.N. special envoy Lakhdar Brahimi on the sidelines of the Istanbul conference later. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said this week Brahimi would visit Syria soon to try to persuade Assad to call an immediate ceasefire.

The government dispatched warplanes to attack insurgent forces surrounding the Wadi-al-Dayf military barracks near Maarat al-Numan in Idlib province, wounding 22 rebels, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The rebels captured Maarat al-Numan this week, cutting the main north-south highway linking Damascus, Homs and Aleppo, and government forces will need to retake it in order to reinforce and resupply Aleppo - Syria's largest city and commercial hub.

MEMORIES OF SREBRENICA

The U.N. Security Council, divided between Western powers on one side and Russia and China on the other, has proved helpless in halting a conflict which has spiraled into civil war and killed more than 30,000 people.

Erdogan said a system which allowed one or two nations to block intervention in such a grave humanitarian crisis was inherently unjust, and that Syria would go down in history as a U.N. failure much like Bosnia in the 1990s.

"How sad is that the United Nations is as helpless today as it was 20 years ago when it watched the massacre of hundreds of thousands of people in the Balkans, Bosnia and Srebrenica," Erdogan told the Istanbul conference.

The July 1995 massacre in Srebrenica was the worst on European soil since World War Two, in which Dutch U.N. peacekeepers abandoned what had been designated a U.N. safe haven to advancing Bosnian Serb forces, who then killed 8,000 Muslim men and boys and bulldozed their corpses into pits.

Turkish officials had expressed hope they might be able to persuade Moscow, which sold Syria $1 billion of arms last year, to soften its strident opposition at the Security Council and that if it succeeded, China would follow suit.

But relations between Ankara and Moscow sank to a new low this week after Turkey forced down a passenger jet flying from Moscow and publicly accused Russia of ferrying military equipment to Assad's forces.

Russia has said there were no weapons on the plane and that it was carrying a legal shipment of radar equipment.

REBELS CONTROL BORDER TOWN, FOR NOW

Elsewhere on Syria's battlefronts on Saturday, government forces rained mortar fire down on the opposition-held Khalidiya neighborhood of the city of Homs, the Observatory said. Explosions were felt throughout the besieged district.

To the south of Damascus near Deraa - cradle of the uprising which began with peaceful street rallies - Assad's troops and rebels were fighting on the edge of the town of Maarba.

After four days of heavy fighting in the town of Azmarin on the Turkish border, the rebels appeared to have a fragile hold.

"Praise be the town is now in our hands ... We have raised two flags inside the town and the battles are over. Azmarin is completely under our control," one resident, who did not want to be named, told Reuters by telephone from inside the town.

But a few km (miles) along the border clashes continued in the Syrian town of Darkush, where the crack of gunfire and sporadic sound of shelling could be heard from Turkey.

In a preliminary death toll across the country for Friday alone, the Observatory listed about 160 dead. Among them were a 3-year-old child killed in a bombardment of old Aleppo, a district whose ancient buildings have been severely damaged.

Tensions between Ankara and Damascus have also worsened. Turkey scrambled two fighter jets on Friday after a Syrian helicopter bombed Azmarin and has warned of a more forceful response if Syrian shells continue to fly over the border.

Syria's state news agency SANA said Damascus was ready to accept a Russian proposal for a Syrian-Turkish joint security committee to try to contain the border violence. There was no confirmation of this from the Turkish side.

Presidential Race Tightens Up in Many of the Crucial Swing States

A new round of polls released on Thursday showed that the presidential race remains tight in many of the crucial swing states. Both President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney hold the lead in at least one of those states, but others, like Wisconsin and Colorado, remain too close to call, according to the latest Quinnipiac/New York Times/CBS poll.

Obama maintains his small lead in Virginia, while Romney appears to have gained the lead in Florida, according to a Tampa Bay Times/Bay News 9/Miami Herald poll also released on Thursday. Other states, like Ohio, that previously looked to have a strong preference for one or the other of the candidates, appear to be back in play.

Here is some of the key information regarding the presidential polling released on Thursday.

* Obama's lead in Michigan, which in late September stood at 10 percentage points, has shrunk considerably since the first presidential debate on Oct. 3. According to an EPIC-MRA poll released on Tuesday, Obama and Romney are now separated by only three percentage points. That gap now falls within the poll's margin of error.

* The pool of undecided voters in Michigan has apparently shrunk as well. The EPIC-MRA poll reported that just 7 percent of likely voters in the state responded that they are still undecided, down from 16 percent in September.

* In Ohio, Newsmax/Zogby polling released on Friday showed that Obama is losing support among independent voters, who are predicted to be a key deciding demographic in that state. The two men are now statistically tied among independent voters in Ohio, with Obama garnering 45 percent to Romney's 44. Obama had up until recently been polling at an advantage within that voter bloc.

* The Tampa Bay Times/Bay News 9/Miami Herald poll found that Romney now has a seven-point lead over Obama in Florida, with 51 percent of the vote versus the president's 44 percent. This is a reversal from late September polling, which had placed Obama with a one-point lead over Romney.

* Colorado remains too close to call, according to the Quinnipiac/New York Times/CBS poll, with Romney and Obama separated by just one percentage point. In Wisconsin, Obama retains a three-point lead, but that advantage is within the Quinnipiac/New York Times/CBS poll's margin of error.

Future bleak for Canadian asbestos industry ? The Cotton Boll ...

The Canadian government recently announced it will stop fighting international efforts to label asbestos as a dangerous substance, potentially sounding the death knell for what was once one of the country?s largest industries.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper?s government is no longer going to oppose efforts to include asbestos in the United Nations? Rotterdam treaty on hazardous materials, according to The Canadian Press.

Industry Minister Christian Paradis, who hails from central Quebec?s asbestos belt, made the announcement last month, speaking in his hometown of Thetford Mines, a community still dotted with imposing tailing piles that remind locals of role asbestos once played in the area.

Canada for many decades enjoyed a reputation as the world?s top producer of asbestos, once hailed as the ?magic mineral? for its fireproofing and insulating characteristics in construction materials.

While asbestos mining began several thousand years ago, it did not start on a large scale until the end of the 19th century. For many decades, the world?s largest asbestos mine was the Jeffrey Mine in the town of Asbestos, Quebec, 90 minutes northeast of Thetford Mines.

Asbestos became increasingly popular among manufacturers and builders in the late 1800s because of its sound absorption, resistance to fire, heat, electrical and chemical damage, and its affordability.

However, it was later learned that prolonged inhalation of asbestos fibers can cause serious illnesses, including malignant lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis.

The European Union banned all use of asbestos and extraction, manufacture and processing of asbestos products in 2005.

The resulting bad publicity related to health concerns crippled the Canadian asbestos industry.

?Health experts and human-rights advocates have frequently voiced concerns about the substance, pointing to studies that have shown inhaling needle-like asbestos fibres can lead to diseases such as lung cancer,? according to The Canadian Press, which added that the World Health Organization estimates that 107,000 people die globally each year from asbestos-related disease.

Canada?s asbestos sector finally ground to a halt last fall for the first time in 130 years when production stalled in both of the country?s remaining mines ? one in Thetford Mines, and the other in Asbestos.

Paradis blamed the new Parti Quebecois provincial government for killing the industry and cast the federal government?s decision not to oppose efforts to include asbestos in the UN?s Rotterdam treaty on hazardous materials as an inevitable response.

Parti Quebecois officials have said they will cancel a $58 million loan, confirmed just a few months ago by the previous Liberal provincial government, aimed at reviving what would be the country?s only asbestos operation, in Asbestos.

Paradis pulled no punches during his announcement, blaming the sovereigntist Parti Quebecois for the turn of events.

?First off I?d like to remind you that Pauline Marois, the premier-designate of Quebec, has clearly stated her intention to forbid chrysotile exploitation in Quebec,? he said.

?Obviously that decision will have a negative impact on the prosperity of our regions ?

?In the meantime hundreds of workers in our region are without jobs, are living in uncertainty and hoping the mine will reopen ? ?Madame Marois has clearly made her decision,? he added. ?So our government has made a decision that it?s now time to look after our communities, workers and families.?

Paradis promised that the Harper government would spend up to $50 million to help a region deeply in need of jobs diversify its economy, according to the wire service.

It?s not entirely clear what the future holds for the Canadian asbestos industry.

One industry official said several other countries ? notably Russia, China and Brazil ? could still block the substance from being added to the UN list as they have in the past. Even if does get listed, it would simply mean adding labels warning about possible health risks, rather than actually limiting exports.

?Inclusion of chrysotile in the Rotterdam Convention would in no way signal the end of the chrysotile business in Canada,? Jeffrey Mine spokesman Guy Versailles said. ?It does not say, ?prohibit imports and exports.??
